What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Completed surveys received from residents and staff. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The last Inspection report dated 26/03/08 showed: The Old School House provides a caring and supportive environment for its residents. There is a range of ever increasing and improving activities available based on the individual and collective needs of the group. These include activities at home, trips out, holidays and attendance at in house education and social facilities. The home operates in accordance with an effective key working system. Staff work positively with the residents helping them to communicate their needs and develop skills and confidence. Residents views and opinions are actively sought. Monthly quality assurance questionnaires are carried out by the key workers. Two weekly resident meetings are held. The home enables residents to maintain appropriate links with families, friends and significant others. The environment has been maintained and improved. The first floor kitchen/laundry room has been upgraded to encourage independence and develop residents skills. Other initiatives to promote independence have been successful. A resident now self medicates and is independent in managing financial affairs. Cordless phones have been purchased so that residents may make and receive phone calls in the privacy of their own room. Robust systems have been introduced to safeguard residents monies. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 The manager and staff team continue to examine the care and support that is provided, looking to innovate and further develop the service. The company has provided additional day services which residents may access if the wish. The manager should ensure that staff have recorded supervision sessions at least six times a year. The purpose is to monitor the work with individuals, offer support and guidance and identify training and development needs. The ASR completed on the 17/03/09 did not give any cause for concern in the context of the service provision. The home did send us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). The AQAA along with other information and intelligence contained sufficient information to contribute towards making a judgement about the frequency of inspections. The AQAA detailed a range of improvements that had been made to the home and to the delivery of care to the service users. What the home considers it does well The AQAA states: Service users are progressing and developing their skills service users are benefiting from the support provided to them and promoting their independence service users are having more input in the day to day running of the home service users have a variety of activities and outings. It is a friendly homely environment that has a good staff ratio per service user What the home considers has improved over the last 12 months The AQAA states: We have tailored life skills to individuals changing needs, Re organised our medication folder to make it more usable and less confusing. We have made efforts to make the upstairs lounge more comfortable What the home considers it could do better. The AQAA states: Allocate more time for supervisions. More tailored training courses to cover specific issues around our service users. We will do this by researching suitable courses and accessing our training dept. Any notifications received made on evidence available did not give the Commission cause for concern in the context of the service provision and were seen to be managed appropriately. In the view of the completed AQAA and no negative intelligence we do not propose to change the current inspection schedule. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. This Annual Service Review will not change the quality rating for the Home. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information
