Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: - the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service The AQAA is a self--assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us numerical information about the service. - What the service has told us about things that have happened. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. - information about how the service has managed issues that have arose relevant information received from other organisations/agencies. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) form. This was clear and provided us with the information we asked for. We looked at the AQAA and other information we have received and our judgement is that the home continues to provide an excellent service for the people who live there. The service continues to seek the views of people who live at The Willows on a daily basis and by use of quality questionnaires. The service has identified the changes it has made based on peoples views. These include the purchase of VHS recorder and videos for people to watch classic films, new house plants (which are looked after by the people who live here) and the replacing the lighting in the kitchen. During the last twelve months the service reports people living at the home have been consulted about the re-decoration of their bedrooms including bedding and curtains. People living at the home are pleased with new kitchen/dining area. Positive comments about the environment have been received by the service from people visiting the home. The service has employed a gardener to ensure people are able to enjoy the garden all year round. Staff are trained in the prevention and control of infection and procedures were reviewed in August 2009. This tells us people continue to live in a safe and well maintained environment. Aids and adaptations are provided to promote independence and meet the changing needs of people who live at the home. Their personal and health care needs continue to be met by a trained staff team. A motorised armchair has been purchased to assist one person to stand from a seated position. Training in foot hygiene has recently been attended by staff. The service continues to make good arrangements for people to access the community and maintain contact with family and friends. An additional member of staff has been recruited to enable an increased programme of individual and group activities to take place, such as regular walks to aid mobility, supporting a person to attend regular bingo sessions and provide group outings. Information provided in the AQAA tells us the service has reviewed its recruitment Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 procedures to ensure the well being of people in the home is fully protected. All relevant checks are carried out before starting employment and a induction programme to the service is provided. 80 of the staff team hold a relevant National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 or above. The service has revised its complaints and protection procedures to assure people of the support that will be afforded them to exercise their right to make a complaint and how this will be dealt with by the service. The AQAA shows no concerns or safeguarding issues have been reported to/by them and none have been received by us. The service continues to monitor its own performance and makes plans for its future development of the service. Two areas it has identified for improvement/development over the next twelve months is more training for staff to meet the sensory needs and providing a sensory area within the home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 24th October 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
