Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints . What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. Updated information in telephone discussion with the Registered Manager. What has this told us about the service? The last key inspection of this service was carried out on 15.12.08 when it was awarded 2 Stars - Good. No requirements were made and 5 recommendations were identified. Regular fire drills are now carried out and there is an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency. Staff supervision is now delivered more regularly and there are written records. A recommendation to provide an annual holiday for people using the service has not been actioned, although we are advised that the providers are aware of this. No action has been taken to date. The AQAA was received by us on the agreed date. The information was adequate allowing us to make a judgment about the current service provision. The care planning system has been changed and modified within the organisation to fit the needs of people at the Woodlands. We are told it is improved, with greater involvement of people using the service. There has been an effort to provide a wider range of activities for people particularly in the community. People are forming new relationships with access to college and other community contacts. Group activity is discouraged where possible in favour of individual/person centered activity. An independent tutor for numeracy/literacy now provides sessions in-house provided by Connections. There has been a greater accent upon developing individual social skills with a view to moving people to more independent living. New people to the service are now assessed at the point of Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 admission to establish the input needed to ultimately move forward into the community. Progress has been made in people going out into the community alone. At the time of the last inspection all were escorted by staff. Now one goes out alone completely unescorted, another has an agreed programme where he is able to go out unescorted and another goes to the local shops alone. This progress has been made in reviewing risk assessments and allowing people to take defined/controlled risks to move towards greater Independence. This is a very positive move. The new providers have carried out major refurbishment work with double glazing throughout, improved kitchen facilities, en-suite bathroom (all rooms now en-suite), new furniture and fittings. People using the service have been involved in making choices in these areas within their home. Since the last inspection there has been one referral under Safeguarding Adults Procedures, a referral made by the home. This has been investigated with assistance from the home in a satisfactory way. One domestic-type complaint has been received and appropriately addressed and responded to. There are regular meetings in the home for people using the service who are able to express their views collectively. Additionally there are annual surveys for people to complete allowing feedback about the service. There are regular weekly meetings to discuss and plan menus. Recently people using the service have become involved in staff recruitment. This is reported to have been very successful and will continue in the future. From information received in the AQAA, discussions with the Manager and other information available to us, our judgment is that the home continues to provide a good service for people as outlined in the last key inspection report. They are making progress in some areas and are aware of the areas they wish to improve upon. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We have no immediate plans to carry out a key inspection and will continue to monitor progress and outcomes for people using this service. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have any concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it.
