Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It is a legal requirement for each service to send us an AQAA annually. This checks the progress being made and will highlight any areas of concern. The AQAA contained all the information we asked for or needed and our judgment is that the home continues to provide good outcomes for people using the service, as outlined in the last Key Inspection report. One requirement was made in the last report for the service to ensure that POVA or CRB clearance was obtained in all instances when new staff are appointed. This has been built into the recruitment procedures to ensure this always happens before staff commence work. We made recommendations to ensure specialist training and care plans for epilepsy and these have been implemented. We recommended more regular staff meetings to facilitate feedback from staff and these now take place at least 6 times a year. The considerable ongoing refurbishment and improvements to the environment have continued during the past year. An additional garden room gives needed extra space and alternative sitting or activity area. The external garden area has had a patio added with new garden furniture and an outdoor smoking area. A large number of people smoke, the internal smoking area remains but is now supplemented by the new external smoking area. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The training kitchen used to maximise the practical and social skills of people, has had a washer and dryer added to further extend skills. There are plans to prepare some people for Step-down - to live in supported living settings in the community. The service have had an impressive programme of activities. These are centred where possible in the community. This has been further strengthened - there are now 2 fulltime activities workers working 7 days 8am - 8pm with a Coordinator (Deputy Manager) who designs and oversees the homes lifestyle programme. The home have recorded 2 complaints and made 1 referral under Safeguarding procedures. These have been handled swiftly and effectively, ensuring the well being and safety of the people involved. People have told us that they are satsified with the service at Weston House and have commented upon the close relationship and good rapport with staff. There are regular meetings where people can voice individual or group opinions about the service and we have seen that these have been acted upon. The fairly consistent 100 occupancy of the home supports the views expressed by people using the service and their relatives. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and shown that they manage issues well. We have confidence that they will seek advice if and when it is needed. They work well with us and have shown us that their sevice continues to provide good outcomes for people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will carry out a key inspection after April 2010. However - we can and will inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people living there.
