What the care home does well One of the staff has taken on the additional role of activity coordinator and has been able to arrange some different activities. There are regular outside entertainers coming in to the home to provide activities like music and exercise. Different activities are organised in the two lounges. Residents have the choice of whether to join in the different activities on offer or not. Staff have received good training, relevant to the needs of the residents and are able to demonstrate how they put it into practice. Staff are enthusiastic and motivated. They have good support from the manager in the home who recognises and builds on their strengths. What the care home could do better: We talked about further developing the activities as part of their person centred planning. This includes recording the spontaneous activities like singing and reminiscence talks that the staff carry out in response to residents generally throughout the day. Staff realised they carry out a lot of activities throughout the day whilst doing something else. They said they would keep a note of them and how residents responded so there is a truer record of what they have been doing during the day. We talked about developing and supporting resident`s communication by providing aids like photos for those who need it. The staff are responsive to resident`s expression when they have been confused and have limited speech. They could think of lots of ways to support each person to make their wishes known and said these would be included in each care plan. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We visited the home unannounced to look at what activities are on offer to the residents and to see what staff training is provided. We were accompanied by an expert by experience who talked to the residents about their lifestyle. We saw that the lounges were nicely decorated and the decor gave a peaceful atmosphere. In one lounge, residents were watching a television programme and in another lounge there was music hall type music playing and many residents were singing along with the CD. Activities include music with exercises, pamper sessions, (we saw that many residents had their nails painted) and outings during the summer to local seaside with fish and chip lunches. Birthday parties are held for the residents and family members are invited. There are occasional open days and there is a good support network from relatives who are encouraged to visit and participate in their relatives care. We saw that the residents looked happy and contented and some had been resident at the home for a number of years. Residents said they are well looked after at the home and the staff are caring and kind. We saw that the staff interacted well with the residents. They were offered drinks regularly and the staff spent time talking with them. One member of staff was looking at photographs in an album with one of the residents and helping her to remember her life before entering the home. We spoke to the staff about their training and how they put this into practice. Staff talked about the different training they have had in how to support people with dementia. The company employs a specialist trainer who supports them if a residents needs change and if there are any issues related to dementia. Staff said they have recently attended equality and diversity training. We discussed the content of this and found that during the conversation it was evident that staff were putting this knowledge into their practice. The staff also spoke about the activities they carry out during the day whilst carrying out caring duties. These included singing and dancing and reminiscence. They said they like to spend the time with each resident and make it good quality. We talked about how they could further develop this using all the different skills each of the team members possess.
