Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA), which was completed and sent to us by the registered manager. This is a self assessment process, which all providers are required to complete once a year. It focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also provides us with some statistical information about the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Information about how the service has managed any complaints. Any surveys returned to us by people using the service and from staff. The previous key inspection. What has this told us about the service? At the last key inspection on 28th October 2008, the home was assessed as being a good service. Since that time there has been one anonymous complaint received by the Commission. This was dealt with under the local authority safeguarding procedures. Social workers visited the home and spoke to people living there and their relatives. Feedback was very positive about the quality of the care provided. The conclusion was that the concerns were not substantiated. The service completed an AQAA and this was returned by the due date in September 2009. The AQAA indicated that the home continues to provide a good service. It also identified what further improvements they wish to make. Surveys were returned by one healthcare professional, seven staff and five people living at Winterton House. A healthcare professional said: I see an excellent environment and very organised. Staff said: The home provides good care for service users and understands the clients needs. Winterton House is a small care home and very well organised and clean. All the residents are very happy and content. People living at Winterton House or relatives on their behalf said: Comfortable bedrooms and quite good meals. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 I am well looked after and cared for. It is very homely here. Im treated as an individual. The staff are friendly and very kind to me. I think this is a very well run care home and would not hesitate to recommend this to family and friends. The home provides good meals and comfortable accommodation. More outings would be better. The home caters for my mums dementia and updates medication in consultation with the memory clinic. She and all at the home are well cared for and staff are always available if she needs extra attention. We as a family are completely satisfied with mums care. A monitoring visit carried out by the local authority in May 2009 concluded that residents were well cared for and that staff numbers were appropriate. The AQAA (Annual Quality Assurance Assessment) identified improvements in the previous year and this included: Continuous dementia awareness and in-house training for the staff. Documents for Preferred Place of Care are now in place. Those Staff, who do not have, are working towards NVQ Level 2. The introduction of more individual activities. Some improvements in the environment. This included the completion of double glazing in all the rooms. New Secured Front Gates. Some bedrooms have been decorated. New and improved radiator tops and sills. A new minibus with a tail lift. The AQAA identified future planned improvements including: Ongoing training for all staff including NVQ level 2 and building on staffs knowledge and experience of working with people with dementia. Ongoing improvements to the environment. The home always notifies the Commission of events affecting people who use the service as required under Regulation 37 of the Care Homes Regulations 2001. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do an unannounced key inspection 15th October 2010 However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have any concerns about the quality of the service or the health and safety of people using the service.
