We visited Withnell House in order to see whether or not the service had complied with requirements made regarding the storage, administration and recording of medication. This was an unannounced visit, which means that neither the management nor staff knew we were going. The visit lasted approximately three hours. We looked at medication systems and procedures, medication stocks and records and we spoke with the temporary manager, senior carers and a resident. We gave full feedback to the temporary manager at the end of the visit. Overall medication was now handled well. The management team had worked hard to improve all aspects of handling and recording medication at Withnell House, and as a result, people were now receiving their medication correctly. Staff supported people living in the home to look after and be responsible for their own medication. People were supported to do this in a number of different ways, depending on their individual needs. The best way to support each person had been decided upon by using comprehensive risk assessments and discussions with the client and their keyworker. This was a great improvement and promoted peoples independence and dignity. One resident told us the new way is great, it makes me think about my medicines more and its good to be trusted to do this myself. The support people needed was recorded in their personal care plan, so that staff knew exactly how to meet each persons needs. Records were now clear and accurate and all medication could easily be accounted for. The temporary manager had introduced new audit (checking) systems so that checks could be made on all aspects of handling medicines. People living at Withnell House were sometimes involved in these checks, so that they could make sure they had been taking their medicines correctly and order new supplies as needed. All staff had undergone medication training and were taking part in ongoing training on the new systems in place. The management of Withnell House must now work with staff and people living in the home to ensure that these improvements are maintained. What the care home does well:
