We looked at all the information we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection on 12th January 2009. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. The previous key inspection report and the results of any other visits we have made to the home in the last 12 months. Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. Relevant information from other organisations. This care home provides a service to people with a learning disability and complex communication needs. Therefore it was not possible to seek their views by use of a questionnaire. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and they know what further improvements they need to make. The home operates an open door policy and encourages relatives, friends and professionals to talk to staff. Monthly and annual service reviews, involving family and outside agencies to share their views, are used to find out what people think about this home. As a result of listening to people the activities programme has been redeveloped and professional support has been sought to help meet the changing needs of the service users. The homes vehicle has also been changed so that the service users can easily get in and out of it. All communal areas of the home and the service users bedrooms have been decorated. A new care plan format has also been introduced. We were told in the AQAA that the support files continue to contain detailed plans directing how each service user likes and needs to be supported in all areas. Comprehensive risk assessments are in place which support the care plans. There are lots of activities for the service users to take part in, both in the home and in the local community. And a written record of attendance is maintained as evidence of this. The manager continues to use a range of other health care professionals, such as the posture care team, behaviour and occupational therapists in order to make sure the service users health care needs are met. There have been no complaints or adult protection issues at Woodham Lodge in the last 12 months. Staff have had training so that they understand about abuse and what they should do if they witness or suspect that this is happening. There has been a low turn over of staff, which is good for continuity of care. And all but Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 one member of staff has completed the NVQ level 2 or 3 qualification in care and the majority of staff have completed the Learning Disability Award Framework or Learning Disability qualification. The manager has achieved the NVQ level 4 qualification in care, Registered Managers Award as well as NVQ level 4 qualification in management. In the last 12 months a regional quality assurance manager has been appointed. They carried out a full review of this service, which was completed in February 2009. We have received no further information to indicate that the home is not providing a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 12th January 2012. However, we can visit the service at any time if information is provided that suggests service users are at risk of harm or abuse Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information Document Purpose: Author: Audience: Further copies from: Annual service review CQC General Public 0870 240 7535 (national contact centre) Our duty to regulate social care services is set out in the Care Standards Act 2000.
