What the care home does well

The home engages with it`s staff and service users and listens to their views when making changes in the home. The home aims to give individualised care to each of it`s service users. People living here are encouraged to be independent and do as much for themselves as they can. Records support this so staff know the amount of support to give to each individual. The home upholds the rights of service users, for example, individual arrangements had been made for all those who wished to vote in the General Election.

During this time we focused on outcomes for service users in the areas of health and personal care, recruitment and staff training. During the visit we were assisted by the registered manager and one of the deputy managers. We spoke to three service users privately and met and observed others. We also spoke to two relatives of service users and have used all their views to form our judgements. Prior to the visit we analysed other information we have about the home, including their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment that they sent to us when we asked for it and six surveys received from staff and eight from service users. Three initial assessments were looked at, they contained enough detail for the home to know it could provide suitable care for the individual. Details included a full medical history, information about the persons care needs, a social history, interests and hobbies and cultural and spiritual needs. Risk assessments are part of this process including assessing any equipment needed. Three care plans were looked at. These are drawn up from the initial assessments undertaken prior to moving in. They were detailed and seen to be kept under regular review. They contained information about support needed for washing and dressing and personal preferences about food and drink. Psychological, physical and social needs were included. Risk assessments were seen and these covered risks such as falls and personal safety. Three residents were spoken to privately. Residents said they were treated with respect and that staff were patient, friendly and kind. They said they felt safe and well cared for. They told us that she can use their call bells to get staff assistance whenever they like. They all said staff come quickly. One resident said he sometimes got frustrated waiting for assistance on other occasions. This was discussed with the manager and the deputy who were both aware of this service users frustrations and said they would look at ways of reducing this. The six surveys received from residents were all positive. They all said they always receive the care and support they need and the home always makes sure they get the medical care they need. The relatives of residents spoken to said they were very satisfied with the care their relative received and found the staff and management open and friendly. The storage and recording of medication was sampled. The records seen were accurate, up to date and no errors or omissions were noted. We saw evidence that a senior member of staff checks the records on a weekly basis so any errors or omissions would be picked up and dealt with promptly. The storage for medication was seen to be suitable and in line with current guidance. Controlled drugs are stored securely and appropriate records were seen to be held for these. During the inspection there were suitable numbers of staff on duty to attend to the needs of service users and spend time with them socially. Residents spoken to said there were enough staff on duty during the day and night to meet their needs. Staff were observed interacting in a positive and respectful manner at all times. They responded to requests Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 from service users and were caring and polite. The homes AQAA tells us they have a robust recruitment and training programme. Records we looked at confirmed this as did the staff surveys we received. All non nursing staff staff are trained to National Vocational level two at least and a Skills for Care Induction programme is in place for new staff.
