What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection on 13th January 2009. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was returned to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Responses to any surveys we sent out. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations including those who commission this service on behalf of social services clients. What other people have told us about the service. A telephone interview with the Head of Care on 31st December 2009. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA stated that the following improvements have been made in the last 12 months: -The homes website has been completely up-dated. -The Head of Care and nurses have had training and are now equipped to show prospective families around the home. -Residents records are better organised and care plans are now more detailed, providing evidence of resident and family involvement. -Continence care plans have been reviewed and now each resident has a more detailed plan and better management strategies. -The home has bought finches as pets for residents, and organised visits from the Pets as Therapy dog. -The sessions provided by professional entertainers has been increased and a new mini bus has been purchased so the number of outings has increased. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 -A volunteer has been engaged to help with outings, and the activities organisers hours have been increased. -The role of the named nurse and key worker have been further developed, and staff have had training on the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. -A modern wet room with multi-position shower has been installed. -A high tech hydro bath with hoist access has been installed in a completely modernised bathroom. -Two hoist accessible toilets have been installed to enable residents who need hoisting to go to the toilet rather than having commodes in their bedrooms. -Some carpets and soft furnishings have been replaced throughout the home. -Pre-set valves have been fitted to taps to prevent scalding, and bedroom sinks and taps have been replaced. -The sluice/bedpan washers have been replaced on each floor. -The sous chef has undertaken more training through a modern apprenticeship scheme. -Two nurses and two care workers have now been trained to deliver in-house moving and handling training to other staff. During the interview with the Head of Care, she confirmed that the three Requirements made at the last inspection have now been met. This was also apparent from the AQAA completed by the Registered Manager. Surveys distributed by the manager and returned direct to CQC had a number of very positive comments about the home including: The home consistently provides kind, effective care. The staff are without exception competent and attentive. (From a relative) Very happy atmosphere. (From a resident) They take excellent care of my Father. (From a relative) This is a very efficiently run home with a high standard of care for the patients. (Health care professional) The home provides good round the clock care and a full and varied activities programme. (Staff member) The home is well run. The staff are helpful, supportive and friendly. (Health professional)
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 No complaints have been received either at the home or to CQC since the last inspection. One Safeguarding Adults referral was made to the Safeguarding Team, but following an investigation by the local authority, no action was found to be necessary and this has therefore been satisfactorily concluded. The previous report concluded that Cookham Riverside offers a very pleasant and homely environment, and residents were complimentary about the health and personal care support they received at this home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection schedule and will carry out a Key Inspection by 12th January 2011.
