What the care home does well

Two of the three people we spoke to were very positive about the service being provided. One person talked about the progress they had made personally and how they could not have done it without the support of staff at Dainton House. Another individual also spoke very positively about the service being provided to them. Three of the four Requirements made at the December 2009 inspection have been fully met. One Requirement was almost met and this is now the subject of a further recommendation. We saw that staff have worked hard to improve the system for administering medication to people. The administration records are up to date and we saw that regular checks now take place to make sure that the quantities of medication correspond with these records. Overnight staffing levels have been reviewed and there are now two staff members on duty at night. Regular Health and Safety checks now take place to keep people safe. Systems are now in place to make sure that these important checks are carried out as planned.

What the care home could do better:

We strongly recommend that the manager and staff look at the triggers in place for updating risk assessments. We are satisfied that assessments are completed to help keep people safe but it is essential that these documents are updated in response to any incidents that have occurred or a change in needs. This is important in order to ensure that each risk assessment is a working document informing the support being provided. One person we spoke to felt that there should be more support available from staff each day.
