What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We looked at the nine surveys (of ten) that were returned to us by people who live in the home. Most people were helped to complete them by family or friends. We looked at what the service has told us about things that have happened in the home, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. We looked at the previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. We looked at any relevant information from other organisations. We listened to what other people have told us about the service. We telephoned the manager to discuss some information given to us via the surveys. What has this told us about the service? We received the annual quality assurance assessment on or before the date it was due back. It was completed to a high standard giving us information we asked for and included evidence about the work they are doing. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. Some of the improvements they have made since the last inspection include improved and more detailed plans of care, with particular reference to how people want their support delivered, training for staff to help people to exercise more control over their lives and some environmental improvements such as decorating eight bedrooms and new carpeting in communal areas. Surveys were received from nine people who live in the home , most were positive about all areas of care including food, activities and staffing. Comments included, staff create a friendly, caring and supportive environment, they feed me well and look after me, they are good at caring for me,staff are very friendly and they provide help and support at all times. Some more negative comments were, could provide more mental stimulation, could be better at preventing falls, should have germ killer dispensers, meals could be better and it could be better decorated. The service considers equality and diversity issues by a variety of means such as, assisting people to follow their religious beliefs, equality and diversity training for staff, physical aids to ensure people have equal access to facilities and using an advocate, if necessary for individuals who may be unable to advocate for themselves. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The manager/provider said that he is dealing with all the negative issues noted in the surveys, he confirmed that he has a cook and meals have improved, he is working with the local memory clinic to try to engage those people who have some mental frailties in the activity programme and they are doing ongoing work to look at how to prevent falls. The home continues to let us know about any things that have happened since our last key inspection and they work well with us. The home has reported that five complaints have been received by the service in the past 12 months, they have all been resolved within 28 days, it noted that none were upheld. The Commission have received no information with regard to Safeguarding issues or complaints in respect of this home (in the past 12 months). What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by the 17th of March 2011. However we can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
