What did we do for this annual service review? We reviewed the last key inspection report dated the 8th November 2007 when the home was judged to be providing good outcomes for the residents. We looked at any other information we had received about this home since the last inspection. We reviewed the AQAA. This is the homes self assessment of how they are providing the outcomes for the residents as well as some numerical data. Information from this AQAA is included in this report. What has this told us about the service? The manager sent us the completed AQAA when we asked for it and it contained all the required information. The manager has kept us informed about any incidents or events at the home as they are required to do. Since the last inspection we have been made aware of three safeguarding issues or complaints. We wrote to the providers in January 2010 to ask them to respond with any actions they had taken to investigate these. The provider did respond and they found that none of the issues could be upheld and they explained their reasons. We have not taken any further action. The AQAA reports that the home had received nine complaints. Two of which were upheld and appropriate actions taken by the home to address the issues that were raised. We received a copy of a letter from social services that was sent to the home in December 2009. This related to the care plan reviews and finding that the manager had not sought the advice of the doctors before writing in the plans whether people should be resuscitated. The care manager advised that the manager must review all of the plans and seek help in deciding what actions were in the best interests of the residents. This aspect of the care will be reviewed during the next key inspection. The AQAA identifies areas where the service could be improved and how this is going to be achieved over the next twelve months. The AQAA also describes the improvements that have already been made. These include an increase in staff training, an increase in staff numbers so that care staff can be involved in more activities with the residents, and a redecoration programme. The manager plans to increase the opportunities for the residents with dementia to be involved in activities. These plans include a new gardening programme, an enclosed garden area and the employment of an activities coordinator. The manager states that the meal provision has improved through a company wide scheme to help the cooks plan nutritious and balanced meals. The manager identified in the AQAA that the residents who are now being admitted have higher care needs than previously. This is a general trend as more people are receiving care at home for longer. However the AQAA records that in the last twelve months eight residents developed pressure sores after moving to the home. This would seem a higher than expected number and this aspect of the care will be looked at Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 during the next planned key inspection. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We do not plan to change our inspection schedule unless we receive information regarding the health and safety of the residents.
