What the care home does well

People are provided with a pleasant place to live and all areas are clean and comfortable. The atmosphere in the home is warm and friendly. The people living in the home said they enjoyed very good relationships with the manager and the staff. One person said "we get on very well and have a good laugh". The people living in the home enjoy a variety of activities both in and outside the home. They said they are always busy doing something and really enjoyed their lives. They also said they were enjoyed to make choices and decisions about how to spend their time. Every effort is made to ensure people are involved in planning their care and ensuring it is delivered according to individual preferences. The staff are well trained to carry out their roles effectively and care and support is given in a sensitive and caring manner.

The home is registered to care for four people with learning disabilities. There are three bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor. There is a bedroom with en-suite facilities, a bathroom, toilet, kitchen, dining room, sitting room and a conservatory on the ground floor. The house is nicely decorated and comfortably furnished. There is a pleasant garden area with a patio to the rear of the house. Taylor Avenue is within easy walking distance of the main bus routes into Ashington. The home is not registered to provide nursing care. The fees range from £410.85p to £607.37p per week. Inspection reports and information about the home are readily available. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: A random inspection was carried out as part of the Commissions programme of visiting good services to ensure they are continuing to maintain their standards. During the visit we spoke to the manager, two staff members and three people who live in the home. We also looked at care plans, staff files, complaints book, accident book, service user guide and health and safety records. The individual records of the care being given to the people living in the home were up to date and gave good information to meet individual needs. Each person living in the home has a person centred care plan which they develop themselves or with support from the staff. These include a person centred care assessment which includes information about their social history, likes and dislikes and preferences. The document also includes photographs or family and friends, significant events, a list of their favourite things, goals, dreams, accomplishments, gifts, strengths and talents. The people who were spoken to said they enjoyed filling in the information and were keen to show them to their families. The case files contain a record of outings and activities enjoyed by each individual. People said they enjoyed a busy social life and liked to visit the local social club, shops, eating out, arts and crafts and visiting local places of interest. Two people enjoy attending a day centre where they are involved in making fancy dress outfits. Another person has a voluntary job at a home for older people. Two people are going on holiday with the Gateway Club where they attend each week. The other two people living in the home are going on holiday with their relatives. The premises were comfortable, well decorated and furnished. The people living in the home said they liked their bedrooms and enjoyed spending time in them. Peoples health needs are well monitored and recorded. Referrals are made to relevant health care professionals when necessary and people are well supported to attend appointments. The staff on duty said they are provided with appropriate training to carry out their roles effectively. All staff in the home have achieved a National Vocational Qualification, Level 3 or above. The staff files were well organised and appropriate checks are carried out before staff are employed in the home to help protect people from abuse. Safety checks are carried out on a regular basis and fire drills take place every month. The people living in the home were able to describe the procedure to follow in case of a fire.
