What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and results of other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? As required, the service returned the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. The assessment gave us the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and the information we obtained from the registered provider during a subsequent conversation. Our judgement is that the service is still providing an excellent service and is aware of further improvements they need to make. The last site visit to the home was carried out on 10 September 2009. The current rating was determined at that visit. We will do a key inspection by the 9 September 2011. The last report was very positive. And clients and their advocates were very complimentary about the service the home provides. The AQAA identified changes, which had been made as a result of listening to people who use the service including making changes to menus by offering more choice and involving residents more in the decision making. Increasing the range of activities and the number of activity people employed so the individual diverse needs, choices and preferences of the homes client groups can be better met. So residents can participate more in garden activities, a working garden has been developed. Indeed the project has been put forward for a Barchester in Bloom award. Assisting a resident to continue with their weekly swimming sessions. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The AQAA indicated a range of areas where improvements have been made in the last year. This includes providing staff with Mental Capacity Act awareness training so they have a better understanding of the implications of the new Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards which have recently been introduced and the implications this may have on the homes current and future residents. Improving the quality and content of the homes brochure, statement of purpose and service user guide. This should provide potential residents and their advocates with more information about the home. The homes link nurses are attending a university to obtain additional professional qualifications in the subject they have the link responsibility for. This includes tissue viability and care of residents who have suffered a stroke. Many more external outings now take place. To make sure each unit gets their equal sure of the external outings they are all designated a date on which to use the transport. This provides a better opportunity to organise specific trips. The home now employs specialist registered mental health nurses. This is good practice as the home provides care and support to some residents with mental health needs. The homes kitchen was inspected last October and was awarded a 5 star excellent rating. There is also evidence from the AQAA that the service is continuing to look at ways of improving what they do to promote good outcomes for those receiving the service. This includes working in partnership with residents, relatives and healthcare professionals so as to reduce the number of inappropriate hospital admissions residents could endure towards their end stage of life. The Liverpool Care Pathway model is being introduced to assist in the process. To analyse more critically drug error incidents so staff are quickly identified as needing retraining, so as to minimise potential risks to residents. To continue to roll out the Today, Yesterday and Tomorrow training so carers have an even greater understanding of person centred care. To keep the homes environment maintained to a high standard by continuing with the internal redecoration programme throughout the home. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection that may have affected residents wellbeing and they have shown that they have managed issues well. The AQAA records the home has received eight complaints during the last 12 months, all of which were resolved within 28 days. Two complaints were upheld. Four safeguarding adult investigations have been referred and investigated. There have been not been any authorisation referrals made under the Deprivation of Liberties Safeguards. Where we were contacted by people who had concerns about the home the matters were already being dealt with by the service in accordance with their complaints procedure as required by us. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 9 September 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
