What the care home does well

What has improved since the last inspection?

Thee have been areas of the home that have been decorated since the last inspection, which include the hallways, kitchen and lounge areas.

What the care home could do better:

There are still outstanding areas of the home in need of repair, especially the carpeting throughout the house. The area of carpet between the hallway and lounge has worn away and the carpet grippers are exposed, and during this inspection one resident was walking around the house barefoot. The blinds in the front bedroom need attention, as they do not completely cover the window, and are awkward for the resident to use. The resident of this bedroom also needs to be supported to tidy her room, the floor area was covered with clothes and objects, which had the potential to become a health and safety issue. Since the last inspection the two residents who share the bathroom, have stopped using the en-suite shower, as this was an infringement of privacy for the resident living in the en-suite bedroom. They have requested that a shower to be fitted in the bathroom, because they preferred showering to bathing, but to date this has not been installed.

The maximum number of residents to be accommodated will be 3 (three). The people accommodated will be aged over eighteen (18) and under sixty-five (65) years on admission. 15th June 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: 6 High Beech Close is a modern executive style house with four bedrooms; the smallest of the bedrooms is now the office and staff sleep-in room. One bedroom has and en-suite bathroom and the two other bedrooms share a family size bathroom on the same floor. The home has a kitchen, utility room off the kitchen, dining and lounge areas and downstairs cloakroom. The home also has a reasonable sized back garden, a driveway and garage to the front of the house. The home is registered for three younger adults with learning disabilities, and is part of East View Housing Management Limited (EVH). 6 Highbeech Close DS0000061409.V261204.R01.S.doc Version 5.0 Page 5 SUMMARY This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This was an unannounced inspection, the second in the year running from April 1st 2005 to March 31st 2006. The inspection took place between 15.30 and 17.30. Since the last inspection the manager has left this home to work in another home managed by EVH. However, in the interim period the registered manager from the EVH home next door is overseeing all the management tasks, and she was present for the first hour of this inspection The overall focus of the inspection was on meeting with the staff and reviewing the progress of the requirements from the previous inspection, a full tour of the home. Time was spent meeting the manager and staff member on duty, inspecting a number of records, policies, procedures and other documentation. Two of the residents were at home and were spoken to and they showed the inspector around the home including their bedrooms. As this report was made following the second unannounced visit, and does not cover all the standards, therefore for the reader to make a judgment about the home, it is recommended that a copy of the last inspection report of the 15th June 2005 also be obtained to have a clearer picture of the home. What the service does well: The home continues to be is well managed with the support from the registered manager of 5 High Beech Close. All the residents spoken to during this visit said they are really treated very well in the home, and like the staff. One resident for sometime has had health problems and has found the stairs difficult to climb, but she has been at moving to another EVH home which is for people with more mobility issues. She is very excited about moving, and informed the inspector that she has visited the new home on numerous occasion, met with the other residents and staff. The residents look very relaxed in the house, which is very warm and homely, and they commented that: • We are all now getting on well. • I’m really looking forward to moving to my new home, because there are no stairs there, but I will miss everyone here. The Commission consider Standard 2 the key standard to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 2 Residents are given all the information they need to be able to make an informed decision to live at 6 High Beech Close. EVIDENCE: There have not been any new residents to the home since the last inspection. However, the home has a comprehensive policy and procedures in place for prospective residents. The home is part of the East View Housing Organisation and has detailed policies and procedures in place for prospective residents. All residents living the home have copies of their contracts statement of purpose and Service Users’ guides. Service users are consulted on, and participate in, all aspects of life in the home. Service users are supported to take risks as part of an independent lifestyle. Service users know that information about them is handled appropriately, and that their confidences are kept. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 11 The residents continue to have every opportunity to have a fulfilled, responsible, valued and socially active life. EVIDENCE: All the key standards were inspected at the last inspection and were fully met. The residents at home during this inspection said how much they enjoyed living at 6 High Beech, and the resident who will be leaving in the next few weeks is looking forward to moving, but sad to leave 6 High Beech Close. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. The home is clean and hygienic. The Commission considers Standards 24, and 30 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24 &27 Residents have sufficient facilities to meet their current needs. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 36 The residents quality of life is enhanced by the support and expertise of the staff employed. EVIDENCE: The staff member on duty informed the inspector that she does have regularly supervision, now with the registered manager of 5 High Beech Close and feels supported in her role by the senior management team. Since the registered manager from 5 High Beech Close has been overseeing this home, there has been joint working between both staff teams. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 39 & 42 Residents consider that the way the home is managed and run makes it an enjoyable place for them to live. EVIDENCE: Residents are generally safe in the home, they need to be supported to tidy, their bedrooms. The inspector found that in one bedroom the floor area was covered with clothes and objects, which had the potential to become a health and safety issue. The residents spoke freely with the inspector about their lives and it was evident that their views are listened to.
