Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review:
What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at information that we have received since the last inspection. How the service has dealt with any complaints or concerns. Any changes to how the servcie is run. The providers view of how ell they care for people from information they provided in the annual quality assurance document (AQAA) that they sent to us. We also looked at information in the surveys that we sent to residents and which were returned to us. And as part of this annual service review we also held discussion with the manager of the service. What has this told us about the service? In discussion with the manager it was stated that work has been carried out in developing the services for those people who have dementia. This has resulted in the implementation of daily menus on all dining tables with a large print version also available. The home have also developed pictorial menus to assist those residents who have mental health problems or speech and language problems. Along with the normal daily choice we all residents are offered an alternative selection to choose from if they would prefer something else. As was noted in a previous visit by us the home developed a small vegetable patch which was requested by a resident who took an active interest in maintaining this. This resident was supported by staff to also look after the flower borders and other areas of the garden. And the manager confirmed that from a competition among all of the companies homes, Ashton Grange won a Divisional gardening competition in 2009. And were placed second in the North Region, all of this made possible by the hard work carried out by the resident. The home continues to promote equality and diversity by encouraging people to be as individual as possible, by treating them equally and accepting them for who they are. In order to gain peoples views on the service the manager has introduced a suggestion box and a comments book to gain the views of service users, visitors etc. Carers are trained to NVQ Level 2 3 and mandatory training is updated regularly. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 Staff at all times respect privacy and dignity by waiting until they are invited into the Service Users private space i.e. bedroom. The service users preferred name is always used by staff. Staff work positively with residents and continue to improve in their management of people with challenging behaviour. With the involvement of Sunderland Mental Health Challenging Behaviour Team. Ongoing redecoration of the home continues to enhance the environment within which the Service Users live enabling them to feel happy and secure within the environment. In looking at comments made in the surveys that had been completed by service users and their relatives. Three people felt that the interior decor could be better. It was confirmed BY the manager that all bedrooms had now been decorated and as part of the rolling programme of decoration. Work would be carried out in decorating all of the communal areas. Information in three of the surveys related to activities with people expressing a view that more activities could be made available. The manager in discussion stated that due to personal reasons the activities coordinator had ceased to work in the home. This had led to a dip in the activities that had previously been provided. However the manager has now recruited a new activities coordinator. And he confirmed that this would lead to a better and improved activities programme for the residents. Community participation is actively encouraged, residents visit the local community centre weekly to take part in bingo and coffee afternoon. Representatives from religious denominations are actively encouraged to visit the home. And the home have a monthly service delivered by the local church (St Lukes). There are no restrictions on visiting the home. Information provided by the manager confirmed the following improvements are to take place over the next 12 months. To continue with the development of life histories to enable better individual activity programme development. To promote family and friends involvement with the home and the activities via resident and relative meetings. Encourage the local community to participate in activities organised within the home. Information received in the 8 surveys that were returned from the 20 that we issued contained a number of positive comments, some of which are listed below. Good atmosphere between staff and families. Treats each service user as an individual. Pleasant atmosphere. Staff are always in pleasant mood. Could not have chosen a better home than this. Overall the manager was confident that a number of improvements had been made in
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 the home. And were also continuing to be made. The manager also confirmed that any recommendations or requirements that were made at the last inspection have been fully addressed. The home continues to send us notifications in a timely matter when incidents occur that we need to be informed about. And there have been no recorded safeguarding incidents within the service. Comments made in the surveys that we received from residents were positive. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 18th November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information
