What the care home does well Peoples` care plans provide clear information about their individual needs and these regularly reviewed to reflect any changes. Health care needs are identified and met.People are able to make choices about their routines and lifestyle. Good procedures and practice for administering medicines protect people living in the home. A good choice of food was available with special diets provided as necessary. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints or allegations. This protects people living in the home. The home is comfortable and well maintained. Aids and adaptations are fitted to suit the needs of the people living in the home. Good infection control procedures are in place to protect people living in the home and staff. Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of the people living in the home. Staff receive plenty of training opportunities to make sure they have the skills to meet peoples` needs. Staff have regular supervision to make sure that they do their job properly. Good systems are in place to check the quality of the service and these take account of the views of the peoples living at the home. The manager is qualified and experienced in providing care. The home was previously a hotel and has been extended to accommodate up to thirty-five elderly people. The home is near to local shops and Berwick can be reached by car or bus in minutes. Bus services pass by the entrance to the home and the main line train station is in Berwick a few minutes away. Turret Villa has bedroom accommodation on the ground and first floor, but there is no lift fitted. All rooms are well appointed with en-suite accommodation. A copy of the last inspection report is also available at the home. The fees are £450 per week. Charges not included in the fees are for hairdressing, dry cleaning, telephone calls, newspapers and magazines. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: Turret Villa continues to provide a good service to the people living there. Each person has an individual plan in place that provides comprehensive information about their needs and how these are met by staff. People living in the home said that they are very satisfied with the support they receive and said the staff are aware of their needs and respond promptly to any requests. Good systems are in place for updating care plans and for reviewing peoples care needs. One of the reviewing officers for the local authority was visiting on the day of the inspection and she said that people get very good support from staff and have a good lifestyle. People said that they are treated with dignity and respect and that they are able to make choices about their routines and lifestyle. There was a good variety of food provided and people said that they get plenty to eat and that they enjoyed their meals. A new cook has been appointed since the last inspection and the menus have been reviewed. The home was clean, tidy and well maintained at the time of the visit. Peoples rooms were personalised to suit their needs and their individual taste. The public rooms are well decorated and appointed. People living in the home said that they were comfortable and happy with the environment. Rooms are decorated and refurbished as necessary. Staffing levels are sufficient to meet the needs of the people living at the home. Staff training opportunities are good and safe working practices training is up to date. Staff said that they have plenty of training opportunities and almost all staff have completed national qualifications in care. They receive regular supervision and feel able to raise issues with the manager and senior staff about the operation of the home. Staff said good communication systems are in place in the home to make sure that staff have the information they need. The home is well maintained and has good systems in place for repairs, general maintenance and refurbishment. Turret Villa provides a comfortable and homely environment that is suited to the needs of the people living there. Policies and procedures for Health and Safety and Infection control protect people living and working in the home. People are protected by the homes good systems for dealing with complaints and safeguarding issues. There are good management systems in place and these are open and transparent. There is a commitment to Equal Opportunities and Equality and Diversity, which is reflected in policies and procedures. Good quality assurance systems are in place to ensure that the operation of the service is regularly reviewed and monitored.
