Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found:
This inspection was a random inspection of the arrangements for medicines in the home by the Pharmacist Inspector. Since the Pharmacist had visited before, all staff who administer medicines had had training in safe handling. A new audit system had been set up and regularly completed by the deputy manager who now had responsibility for all medicines procedures. During the inspection we found that all the medicines needed were in stock and suitable arrangements were in place to re-order supplies. On discussion with the staff it was evident that at times there were problems with the supply of medicines which then took time to sort out. We recommended that the home sees and checks the prescriptions before they are sent to the pharmacy for dispensing. We saw staff giving medicines to people in an individual and caring manner. The correct checks and records were made at the time of administration. We looked at the records of someone who had been admitted to the home and found that all the appropriate assessments and checks on medicines had been done so that they received the correct treatment when they came to the home. People who had been prescribed medicines to be used as required had clear guidelines in their notes for staff to follow and accurate records were made of all medicines given and the times. Medicines were all stored appropriately. Some eye drops had not been dated when they were opened which meant that staff could not be sure when they need discarding. Eye drops should be changed after 28 days to avoid the risk of infection. We did not inspect any other areas during this inspection and any outstanding requirements were not assessed.
