What the care home does well

Service users said that although the staff are sometimes very busy they are always pleasant and polite. There are safe systems in place for the administration of medication. Although there is no one in the home at present who administers their own medication, the home would support them in this if they were able. Family and friends can visit the home at any time. Service users said they liked the food and that the activity programme is good. Residents said that their privacy is maintained and that they are respected. Systems are in place to protect service users from abuse. The company has policies and procedures in place to support staff working in the home. Health and Safety systems within the home protect service users, staff and visitors.

What has improved since the last inspection?

There has been some improvement in the care planning process. Further development is recommended to ensure that service users are aware their planned care and agree to it. Some refurbishment of the environment has commenced, those areas completed were found to be bright and cheerful. Some bedroom doors had locks fitted and plans were in place to fit locks to all bedroom doors. The cleaning schedule has been revised and a daily check is now made of all rooms for unpleasant smells. Where a problem is identified the room is cleaned immediately.

What the care home could do better:

Each service user must be supplied with a statement of terms and conditions, which clearly sets out the fee payable to the home and the service they can expect to receive for that fee. Care plans should be further improved and evidence should be available to confirm that the service user has been consulted with regard to the plan and has agreed to it. Service users and relatives should be told about the complaints procedure so that they are aware of the process to follow when they wish to raise concerns. Staffing levels should be kept under review to ensure that they are in sufficient numbers to meet all of the needs of service users. The company needs to make suitable management arrangements for the home to ensure that the appropriate level of nursing care is being provided to service users and that staff are supported in their role.
