handwritten entries were signed and dated; any alterations initialled; and stock had been booked in and/or carried forward correctly The nurse agreed that she had made a mistake by leaving the trolley unattended She told us she had not had any formal medication training other than during her nurse training when she was trained on the administration of medicines She said the nurse who had made the error was newly appointed, but had been to the home to observe the drug round on eight occasions before she took up her post We spoke with the manager, James Sewards He told us he had carried out a thorough investigation following the error, which had included interviewing a number of staff to find out exactly what had gone wrong He said he had spoken with all staff concerned, especially the nurse, who was at the time on one of her first shifts alone He felt she was sufficiently distressed by her mistake to never make another He told us this was the first medication error at Beaumont Park for about four years There was a copy of the homes medication policy in the office The policy states clearly that the MAR chart must only be signed when the nurse has seen the person actually take the medication We discussed the training staff receive to administer medication The manager said Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 only trained nurses administer medication, and they all receive training when they train to be nurses New staff observe the medication rounds He said he had looked into getting further training, but anything on offer seemed to be too basic for trained nurses We suggested that perhaps that was what was needed, as the mistakes (both the original incident, and leaving the trolley unattended) were very basic What the care home does well: What they could do better: If you want to know what action the person responsible for this care home is taking following this report, you can contact them using the details set out on page 2 Care Homes for Older People Page 5 of 8 Are there any outstanding requirements from the last inspection?
