The pharmacist inspector from CSCI visited the home following a concern raised around medicine in the home. There were a few issues that will need addressing. The controlled drugs cupboard was not fixed to the wall in accordance with the requirement of the law. Controlled drugs were not being stored in the more secure inner cupboard. The fridge used for storage of medicines was not lockable. The records around medicine management for audit purposes were good. The home needs to include the total balance in the controlled drugs register as zero when medicines are returned to pharmacy for disposal. Administration procedure follows good practice. One resident was prescribed antibiotic. This treatment was commenced on Monday when the medicine was received, but the medicine had been dispensed on the Friday according to the label. Another medicine was marked out of stock the previous day and records showed it had been ordered. This was an ongoing repeat prescription item and continuity of supply should be maintained. Special instructions for a particular medicine to be taken before food were not being adhered to. Medicine that required frequent dose changes following blood tests were being managed well. Risk assessments were available for any medicine which was self administered.
