What the care home does well

This home delivers a quality standard of care to the residents and provides a comfortable environment for the residents to live in. The atmosphere in the home is warm and homely, with good quality soft furnishings. All rooms are personalised with the resident`s belongings such as photos and ornaments. The staff are friendly and greet visitors in a positive helpful manner.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Brackenridge provides an excellent service for people with mental health problems. The residents are happy and well cared for and the majority of them enjoy an active social life in the local community. The views of the residents are taken seriously and the staff act in the best interest of the residents welfare.

What the care home could do better:

The home has consistent staff, that have worked at Brackenridge for a considerable amount of time and it provides a stable environment for the residents. The manager consistently strives to improve the lives of the people who live in the home and she should continue to do so.

One named individual who is above the age category is allowed to reside in the home. 21st June 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Bracken Ridge Manor is a 17-bedded care home with nursing for Adults with Mental Health Problems. The home is a converted property on 3 floors with the majority of bedrooms being on the first floor and second floor and the usual living accommodation on the ground floor. There are 11 single rooms and 3 double rooms, 2 rooms have en-suite WC and hand basins. The home is situated on the High Street at Loftus with easy access to local amenities and directly on a bus route. Many of the service users have lived in the home for a number of years. Bracken Ridge Manor creates a homely, clean and welcoming environment for the residents, which allows for a domestic and family feel. The home was not told beforehand about the inspection. The inspection lasted three hours with two inspectors. During this inspection discussion with residents took place, the inspector walked around the home, read care records, activities and social contact, complaints system, resident survey and the staff records. A tour of the home showed that it was clean, tidy and well decorated throughout. What the service does well: What has improved since the last inspection? Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Prospective users’ individual aspirations and needs are assessed. Prospective service users know that the home that they will choose will meet their needs and aspirations. Prospective service users have an opportunity to visit and to “test drive” the home. Each service user has an individual written contract or statement of terms and conditions with the home. The Commission consider Standard 2 the key standard to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 2 Each residents has had an in-depth assessment of their needs completed. EVIDENCE: Each resident has a personal care file that is completed by a Registered Mental Health Nurse. The file consists of a detailed past medical and social history and a needs assessment for the person’s well-being. Assessments include risk of harm to the resident with equipment or health related issues. Other health care professionals such as psychiatrists are involved in the assessment process. Service users know their assessed and changing needs and personal goals are reflected in their individual Plan. Service users make decisions about their lives with assistance as needed. Service users are consulted on, and participate in, all aspects of life in the home. Service users are supported to take risks as part of an independent lifestyle. Service users know that information about them is handled appropriately, and that their confidences are kept. The Commission considers Standards 6, 7 and 9 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 6,7,9 Resident’s assessed needs are reflected within their individual plans of care. These provide guidance for staffs’ care practice. Resident’s are supported to take risks within a risk management framework. This helps to ensure they remain safe and that their independence is promoted. EVIDENCE: Care plans are completed with the resident and their named nurse; discussion with the resident is paramount to allow the resident to agree with the proposed plan of care. The main focus of the care plan is to ensure the person’s health is at an optimum level and also describes treatment and rehabilitation that is appropriate. The care plan describes the decisions that the resident makes with regard to their well being. Residents are supported by a nurse when making decisions about their lifestyle. Risk assessments are undertaken to ensure the person can have a fulfilled life free from harm or danger. Service users have opportunities for personal development. Service users are able to take part in age, peer and culturally appropriate activities. Service users are part of the local community. Service users engage in appropriate leisure activities. Service users have appropriate personal, family and sexual relationships. Service users’ rights are respected and responsibilities recognised in their daily lives. Service users are offered a healthy diet and enjoy their meals and mealtimes. The Commission considers Standards 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 13,15,16 A range of opportunities are available to service users to take part in age appropriate activities which promote a healthy lifestyle. Good contact is maintained between service users and their relatives and the opportunity is available for service users to spend time with their families and friends outside of the home. EVIDENCE: The residents enjoy an active lifestyle and they attend various places such as computer group, village arts, swimming pool, MIND, voluntary working in the charity shop, walk in centres and the local pubs. Residents who are in relationships are advised and guided by the staff in the home. Whilst reading the care records it is evident that the residents’ rights are respected and are encouraged to take responsibility in their day to day lives. One resident is going to Lapland for the day with a member of staff from the home. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 18,19,20 Service users receive good support from staff to ensure that their personal, physical and emotional health needs are met. Good systems for storing and administering service users medication are in place to ensure that service users get the treatment that they have been prescribed. EVIDENCE: The care notes show that residents receive the appropriate level of support and the evaluation of the care demonstrates their satisfaction. Discussion with two residents clarified that they were happy and well cared for. If residents are able to administer their own medication they are supported in doing so. There is one resident who successfully manages his medication, he collects his prescription himself and checks it with the trained nurse on duty. All staff have had training and updating in the safe handling of medication. Drug ordering is kept to a minimum to prevent waste. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 34,35 Robust recruitment & selection procedures and regular training opportunities ensure that service users are appropriately supported and protected by a competent and qualified staff team. EVIDENCE: The staff records show that everyone completes an application form, the manager requests 2 references, a criminal records bureau check is sought and photographic identification is included. The Registered Nurses are checked with the Nursing & Midwifery Council to ensure they are eligible to practise. The manager has adopted the skills for care induction programme, 60 of the care and domestic staff have achieved a National Vocational Qualification in care. Training in place currently includes Advanced Care Practises, Food Hygiene and Infection Control. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 37 The manager of Brackenridge undertakes a number of quality checks and audits on a regular basis. An annual questionnaire survey is also conducted to gain the views of service users’ relatives and independent representatives. EVIDENCE: The 17 residents living in the home participated in a staff survey in July 2005. The survey included room comfort, care, staff friendliness, cleanliness, meals, décor, complaints, social activity and laundry. The overall outcome was that all of the residents were please or very pleased with the care they received from the staff at the home.
