What the care home does well The residents are supported to engage in meaningful recreational, therapeutic and social activities. The home has excellent collection of items in the reminiscence room to help residents who may have memory problems. The manager provides well planned and effective staff supervision for all the staff. The staff supervision process is regularly reviewed and there has been recent changes to include a standing agenda on safeguarding matters. Also the residents` monthly reviews include ispecific agenda on complaints and safeguarding. The complaints record showed details of complaints, going back to 2003. The record provides details of complaints and how those complaints were investigated and what the conclusions were. There are good systems in place for managing the residents` personal allowances. Two residents` finances were checked by the inspector. Receipts are available on each resident`s record, showing how their monies were spent. Each resident has a hard back book which contain the details of how their monies are spent on their behalf. The books are regularly audited and signed. There were no discrepancies noted in the records and in the total amount of monies held for the individuals. Date of last inspection Brief description of the care home Ashlea Mews is a purpose-built care home for older people in South Shields. It is registered to care for 40 people, 8 of whom may have physical disabilities and 6 may have sensory impairment. The home cannot provide nursing care. It is located near to

A health centre and local shops are a short distance away and the beach is a short drive away. It has garden areas to the rear of the home that are accessible to all service users and an extensive car park to the front of the building. The building has level access into the home with wide corridors internally for ease of movement. It has a lift to take people to and from the first floor and adapted toilet and bathing facilities, and en-suite bedrooms throughout. The decoration, furnishings and fittings are of good standard and the home has a friendly comfortable environment. An emergency call system is in place. The weekly fees are GBP 436.00 to GBP 471.60 per week depending upon care needs. Additional charges are made for hairdressing, personal items and newspapers. The inspector looked at two outcome areas including protection and staff. Records relating to training were examined. The inspector found that the manager has ensured that staff continue to receive training that is relevant to their roles. These include staff refresher training in safe handing of medication, first aid, infection control, moving and handling, safeguarding adults, mental capacity act and deprivation of liberty safeguards. The home is well managed, and is led by a manager who is well motivated and effective in the day to day management of the home.
