What the care home does well

The people who use this service tell us that they find the staff kind and caring and generally they are happy living there.

What the care home could do better:

In our opinion, the absence of a robust management structure in this home is leading to deficiencies in the care of the people who live there. This lack of leadership and support has lead to the home "drifting ". Whilst the staff seem to be kind and caring we are able to find only limited evidence of the care and support that is being provided for residents. The requirements that we issued at our last visit, relating to these issues have still not been addressed. There must be evidence that care planning is undertaken after consultation with residents or their representatives in order to show that care and support is being delivered in a way which suits them. Care plans must identify all of the areas where residents will need support. There must be sufficient detail to ensure that all staff know how people should be cared for and they must be reviewed regularly so that any changes can be addressed. The service responds to our criticism and requirements rather than being managed in aproactive way to ensure the wellbeing and safety of the people who live there.

A large proportion of the accommodation is provided in what were previously designed to be shared rooms, without en-suite facilities and others are smaller than would now be acceptable. There is only one lounge/dining area and this is in the form of a conservatory, which despite fans, is sometimes uncomfortably hot. There is a shaft lift to ensure accessibility throughout the home and the conservatory overlooks the rear garden. There is limited off-street parking however, the home is in a quiet road and close to public transport links. At the time of this inspection we were told that fees range from £525- £850 per week. Any extra charges payable for services such as hairdressing would be discussed prior to admission. A copy of the homes Statement of Purpose, Service User Guide and the latest inspection report can be obtained from the homes Registered Providers or the latter can also be obtained from the Commission For Social Care Inspection from their website. www.csci.org.uk Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: We found that the requirements that we made at the last inspection, which were concerned with care planning had not been met. Although people look well cared for, the documentation that provides the evidence of how their health care needs are being met, is not of an acceptable standard. There is no evidence to show that residents or their families are being asked to contribute to the care planning process. This means that we are not able to tell if they have been able to influence the care and support that they receive. Not all of their assessed health care needs have been identified and there is insufficient detail provided to enable all staff to understand how care should be delivered. Where risk factors have been identified there is no overarching plan about how these will be managed. We had concerns that pre-employment checks on new staff were incomplete and we have asked for more information in order to provide some clarity. At this visit we found that previous concerns regarding equipment that was not being adequately serviced and repaired had been met.
