Pauline Long and Suni Chotai visited the home on 2nd November 2009 at 12:20 to check the progress made following an unmet statutory requirement notice [SRN] issued on 2nd September 2009 with a compliance date of 21st September 2009. At a previous visit on 28th September 2009, the elements of the above [SRN] notice found not to be met were [numbered as per the original notice]: (i) Ensure that clear and accurate records are kept in respect of all medicines administered at the Home. We looked at all the current and previous months Medicine Administration Record [MAR] charts and found that clear records were made of the administration of medicines, when medicines are not given the reason for the non administration was recorded, any changes in doses were clearly marked and a second person initials to indicate that these have been checked. (ii) Have a system in place to ensure that all medicines are signed for as soon as they are administered. We watched a carer giving medicines to people and noted that good practice was followed. The MAR charts were signed immediately after the medicine was given. (iii) Ensure that there is a system in place at the Home which will ensure that any gaps in staff signatures on the medication record sheets are identified and addressed in a timely fashion. We saw the audit sheet now in place to check daily that records have been completed. (iv) Ensure that all staff check the medication record sheet prior to administering the medicines, this will ensure that service users will get their medicine as prescribed. We watched a carer giving medicines to people and noted that good practice was followed. The MAR charts were checked before medicine were removed from the supply and given to people. (vii) Ensure that all of the staff at the Home who administer medication undertake up to date training in the safe handling of medicines and that they are competent to undertake the task. We checked the training records of the carer giving medicines on the day and found that she had completed a course in 2007. In practice we observed that she followed good practice. We noted that a new training package had been accessed from the local pharmacy which consists of a workbook and would require mentoring from a senior person qualified to do so. The work books were received the morning of the inspection and had been handed to staff present at the time. This training had not commenced. In conclusion, the Statutory Requirement Notice dated 2nd September 2009 has not been
