What the care home does well

The home is well maintained and nicely decorated throughout Good interaction was seen between staff and service users. Service users were seen to be assisted with their food by care staff in an unhurried manner. Service users looked well groomed and dressed. Activities such as Yoga is available to service users on a weekly basis. The home offers a number of outings in the summer months to encourage service users to go out into the community.

The issues raised at the last inspection have been actioned.

What the care home could do better:

The home needs to build on the weekly activities already being offered to service users.The home must ensure that all staff and especially those nurses from abroad understanding the fire regulations and emergency procedures

The unannounced inspection took place over 5 hours on the 10 May 2005. A tour of the home took place, and some records were inspected. Two visitors and seven service users were spoken to. At the time of the inspection there were 32 service users living in the home and a new service users was due to move into the home next day. The home has been owned and run by Mrs Sandhu for the last 15 years What the service does well: What has improved since the last inspection? Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Each service user has a written contract/ statement of terms and conditions with the home. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Service users and their representatives know that the home they enter will meet their needs. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. The Commission considers Standards 3 and 6 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 1,2,3,4,5, Service users and their representatives are provided with the information they require before making a decision to move into the home. EVIDENCE: Service users are provided with the information they require before moving into the home. Service users are being provided with a written contract and a statement of the homes terms and conditions Service users are having their needs assessed prior to moving into the home. Care plans are being completed within a reasonable timescale. Intermediate care is not being offered at this time. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 7,8,9,10, Service users health needs are being supported in the home through their assessed care plans. EVIDENCE: Service users are registered with the local G.P. practice unless they wish to retain their own doctor. Service users are supported to take their medication at regular times and it is recorded are stored securely. Service users care plans are maintained to ensure all assessed care is given. Service users and visitors spoken to said they are pleased with the care their relative receives. The service users are treated respectfully by the staff. Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 12,13,14,15, Service users are encouraged to make choices over their daily activities and choice of menu. EVIDENCE: There was a very relaxed atmosphere in the home on the day of the inspection. Service users said they were very happy with the home and the care they received. They enjoyed the gardens and the countryside views. During the inspection service users were seen to be assisted to use the ramp to access the garden. Arrangements were in progress for the summer outings, visits to gardens, the seaside and picnics were already planned. Service users spoken to were happy with the care they received. They looked forward to the hairdressers visit each week Service users were provided with two choices to the main meal of the day. Special diets are provided for diabetics, and the liquidised diets were seen to be well presented. Evening snakes are available to service users and are prepared by the staff. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) Service users live in a very nice environment and their needs are being met EVIDENCE: The home is well decorated and free from odours, and has a very relaxed atmosphere. Service users were cheerful and interested in what was going on around them All of the laundry is undertaken in house. Service users clothes looked well pressed and they were dressed suitably for the time of year. Service users are encouraged to bring some of their own possessions in with them to make their own rooms more homely.
