Conditions of registration: Date of last inspection 4th May 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Pine Heath Nursing Home provides accommodation for 40 service users in a large two storey building situated on the main road between Holt and Cromer. It accommodates older people who are in need of nursing care and who also may have a degree of mental frailty. Most of the rooms are single and of a good size and only five are double rooms. Communal space is short with the lounge accommodation half of what it should be for the number of service users. It is therefore common for many of the service users to remain in their rooms. However a large room just off the registered accommodation has been made into an activities room and is bright and airy. Activities take place in there every day. The grounds are attractive and extensive though would benefit from some concrete walkways so service users could enjoy them more. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This inspection was carried out late in the evening to check on night staffing arrangements. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 9 Medication was being dealt with in a proper fashion and properly recorded. EVIDENCE: The nurse-in-charge was just completing the dispensing of night medications. The medication administration records were looked at. They were properly completed and up to date. Medicines are securely stored in one of the offices on the ground floor in proper medication cabinets. Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 12 The routine appeared relaxed and flexible with residents staying up to watch T.V. if they wished to do so. EVIDENCE: Due to the late hour all of the residents had retired to their bedrooms. Some were still up and one resident was observed watching television in her room. Some residents prefer to have their bedroom door open at night. Bedroom doors have now been fitted with Dorgard devices which release, allowing the door to close, when the fire alarm sounds. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 26 The home was clean and free from unpleasant odours. EVIDENCE: A tour of the home was made with the nurse in charge, though bedrooms were not entered so as not to disturb residents who were sleeping. All corridor areas were clean and there was no trace of any unpleasant odours. There were no obvious hazards noted during the tour of the home. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 27 The number of staff on duty was satisfactory. One of the staff on duty was a registered nurse. EVIDENCE: The staff rota was looked at. The number of staff on duty was also checked. There was one registered nurse on duty and three care staff. These staff were on duty until 7.30am the following morning. There were forty residents at the home requiring care. The number of staff on duty complied with the staffing notice in force for night staffing in care homes providing nursing care. The nurse in charge has worked at the home for some time and reported that she also did some day shifts as well as night shifts.
