CQC found this care home to be providing an Excellent service.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

Each person has an individual plan, which is regularly reviewed and amended to reflect their changing needs. Health care needs are identified and met. Recording is of a high standard. People lead active lives and are able to make choices about how they spend their time. Good systems are in place for administering and managing peoples` medicines. People make choices about their routines and lifestyle. The home is very comfortable and well maintained. Aids and adaptations are fitted to suit the needs of the people living in the home. Good infection control procedures are in place to protect people living and working in the home. Staffing levels are flexible and meet the needs of the people living in the home. Staff have plenty of training opportunities to make sure they can meet peoples` needs. Staff have regular supervision to make sure that they do their job properly. Good systems are in place to foster effective communication between the staff.Good health and safety systems protect the people living in the home and the staff working there.

What the care home could do better:

The problems identified with the bath should be resolved either by appropriate repairs or by replacing the bath.

The home is accessible to the town centre of Blyth and close proximity of local amenities. Northgate and Prudhoe Health Trust manage the home. The home is registered to provide personal care to eight adults with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. Fees for the home are £1090.50 per week. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 7 What we found: Sixth Avenue continues to provide an excellent service to the people using the service. Individual plans provide very good information about individuals needs and how they are met by staff. Good systems are in place for assessing peoples needs and for updating records to show any changes. Plans are person centred and supports peoples individual development. Routines are flexible and people are encouraged to make choices about their lifestyle and activities. Individuals and their families where appropriate are involved in reviewing plans of care. The systems for managing medicines protect the people using the service. The premises are well maintained and provide clean, comfortable, homely accommodation that suits the needs of the people living at Sixth Avenue. The houses are well furnished and equipped. Staff have identified problems with the suitability of one bath and the manager is looking into getting a replacement for this. The laundry is well organised and equipped and good standards of infection control are in place. Staffing levels are sufficient to ensure that people get the support they require. Staff have plenty of training opportunities and all staff have achieved national qualifications in care. They receive regular supervision and feel able to raise issues with the manager or the senior staff about the operation of the service. The home has good systems in place for repairs, general maintenance and refurbishment. Policies and procedures for Health and Safety protect people living and working in the home. There are regular health and safety audits to ensure that the home is safe and that working practices protect the people living and working at Sixth Avenue.
