What the care home does well People receive good care that is organised to suit their individual needs. Individual plans clearly identify their support needs and the action to be taken by staff. This means that they get the care and support they need. Good systems are in place for identifying risks for individuals and this information is recorded in individual records. This helps to keep people safe. People have good opportunities to take part in social activities and to follow their interests. This means that they lead active lives and enjoy good social opportunities. The food is well cooked and presented with a varied menu available. People are afforded choices and alternatives are always available. Menus take account of healthy eating principles and special diets are available as required. People are well supported by staff at meal times. Good complaints and safeguarding procedures protect people living in the home. The home is well maintained, comfortably furnished and clean. Aids and equipment is provided to suit the needs of the people living there. This makes it a pleasant place to live. There are enough trained and experienced staff to meet the needs of the people living in the home. Good management systems ensure that the home is well run. The home is accessible to the town centre of Blyth and close proximity of local amenities. Northgate and Prudhoe Health Trust manage the home. Fees for the home are £1090.50 per week. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: Sixth Avenue provides a good standard of individualised care to the people living there. Peoples choices and preferences in their daily lives are identified within their support plan. Good information is available in individual plans. Plans are reviewed regularly and at other times to suit individual needs. There was evidence that risk assessments are personalised, very detailed and are regularly updated. Good information was available to show how risks are minimised and provide clear comprehensive information for staff. Specific risks are identified properly and any regular checks needed are well recorded to show these are being done as prescribed. Staff were aware of risks and showed this during the inspection. There was evidence that peoples likes and dislikes are identified and known to staff. Menus are on a four week cycle and records are kept of food intake. Peoples particular needs are identified and any need for special diets is clearly recorded in care plans. Nutritional assessments are in place and appropriate advice taken is recorded and followed through in care plans and other documentation. Information in peoples plans was detailed and person centred. Good information was available to show people are supported to follow their interests, hobbies and social preferences. People lead active lives and are well supported by appropriate staffing levels and transport as necessary. People were relaxed and appeared happy during this inspection. They had a good rapport with staff. Good information is recorded about peoples health care needs. There is evidence that any health issues are appropriately identified and advice from health professionals is incorporated into care plans. All interventions by health care professionals is recorded in individual files. Information is in place about dealing with challenging and other behaviours and this provides clear guidance for staff. No complaints have been made since the last inspection. Good information is available for people about making a complaint in written form, CD and DVD. There have been no safeguarding referrals. Staff are aware of the procedure to be followed in the event of an allegation being made. Policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and children are in place. Good systems are in place for managing peoples money. Good recruitment procedures keep people safe. Whistle blowing and grievance procedures are in place for staff. The two bungalows were clean and odour free at the time of this inspection. The home is well decorated and maintained. Systems were in place to identify priorities for future works and these included refitting the kitchens and fitting new flooring in the main hallways. Sufficient staff were on duty during this inspection to meet the needs of the people in the houses. Training in safe working practices is up to date. Good recruitment practices are followed and two staff files showed appropriate reference and CRB checks completed. The manager is experienced and qualified. She has a good understanding of the organisations management systems. The home is well managed and there are regular Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 Regulation 26 visits carried out with reports available to confirm this. Good quality assurance systems are in place that take account of the views of people using the service. Staff supervision happens at appropriate intervals. Staff said that they feel well supported by the manager and senior staff. Health and safety practice is good and appropriate training has been provided.
