Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how well the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service; these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. Relevant information received from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The Home completed and returned their annual quality assessment when we asked for it and within the timescales given. The document was very comprehensive and informative. It identified areas where the service had improved in the last year and others where further developments were being planned. It included evidence that the service regularly sought the views of residents and other stakeholders to inform their planning. The home continues to make contact with the Commission if there are any significant events that affect the well being of residents. There have been no complaints made to the home or to the Commission since the last inspection. The home has strategies in place to ensure that those who live in the home and those who visit can make their views and complaints known. People can be confident their views will be listened to, taken seriously and acted upon. The owners have made some environmental changes since the last inspection including decorating any room that becomes vacant before the new person arrives. There are plans in place for a new lift to be installed and the home has been granted permission from the local council. Work is due to start in early June and all necessary notification have been made. Whilst this work is being undertaken that home intends to complete the work started in rooms 7 and 8. The manager has achieved a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care and is currently working towards the last three modules of a Degree in Social Care. She has also completed a Dementia certificate which counts towards the degree. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The AQAA confirmed that 100 of staff have undertaken their NVQ to level two or above. Staff commenced the safe practice of medication in March and hope to complete by July 2009. The manager has completed a H&S module in medicines. There are plans in place to include Palliative Care training to raise staffs awareness. The registered manager confirmed that all staff receive supervision at least six times a year and there is an ongoing and comprehensive training programme in place. Throughout the annual quality assurance assessment it was evident that equality and diversity issues were promoted and incorporated within the service. The home enables residents to contact families who live a distance away by e-mail. All relevant employment checks are carried out to ensure staff are appropriately employed and residents remain in safe hands. The AQAA identified other areas of improvements mainly focused around the environment and residents involvement with the running of the home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to the inspection plan and we will do a key unannounced inspection by April 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
