Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 10 What we found:
We visited this home in response to concerns raised about the events leading to an admission of a person to hospital. We were also told of some concerns in regard to the cleanliness of the home and people living in the home and issues of staff attitudes. We found that the manager was keen to give us relevant information that prompted the admission to the hospital however we found some gaps in documentation including, information about who was on duty and the records of the maintenance of the equipment in use at the home. We noted that staff had not followed the homes own procedures for signing in when they came on duty and this had happened for a number of days including the days of concern. There was no record kept of allocation of people that required assistance kept although this was the practice. The manager stated that this was now being put in to place. We looked at the details of the persons admission and checked the information held on a number of people living in the home that required assistance from a hoist. We found that people had appropriate lifting equipment to meet their needs. Although hoist and lifting equipment was checked documentary evidence wasnt available and documents provided later were not clear about what part of the St Marthas site they related to. We noted that in two situations that concerns had been raised either in review or as separate incidents and that these were not logged in the homes complaints book. This means that the organisation cannot effectively monitor trends and review the management of the care of people. One incident demonstrated a poor attitude to the person they were caring for. We found that on the occasion that had been raised as a concern, there was evidence that the person was in pain, and that medical attention had not been gained in a timely way. We noted that the person had been ill and records of that event were delayed and did not prompt actions to monitor the persons well being. We found that the care planning was generally well ordered however reviews did not necessarily take into account all the information relating to the persons wellbeing since the last review. We have instructed the manager to undertake an investigation into the incident and inform both us, social services and the relatives of the outcome of their investigations. We looked at some peoples rooms to check the cleanliness, we observed how peoples hygiene needs had been met and were appropriately dressed. The rooms that were looked were clean and appropriately furnished. What the care home does well:
