Date of last inspection Brief description of the care home St Marthas provides care and accommodation for older people in three buildings, Ash House and Cedar House and in additiona Beech House that also provides nursing care on the same site. The home has been established for a number of years however was acquired by Southern Cross Healthcare in November 2007. St Marthas accommodation is provided over three levels in each house. Ash House provides accommodation for 25 Care Homes for Older People
Page 2 of 10 people. There are 3 double bedrooms and the remainder are single occupancy. Cedar House provides accommodation for 13 people. There are 2 double bedrooms and the remainder are single occupancy. Some of the rooms on the upper level require residents to be able to manage some steps. A passenger lift is available to the first floor and there is a stair lift to the second floor. Beech house has 16 single and 10 shared rooms. These houses of St Marthas share a spacious, well maintained patio/garden area. St Marthas is about a fifteen-minute walk from the Bordesley Green Road, where there is a main bus route into Birmingham City Centre and a railway station is nearby. Limited off road parking is available. The current scale of charges are available on request and depends on the care needed. Please note that any nursing home determination is added to the fees. The pharmacist inspection lasted three hours. Seven people who used the service medication was looked at together with their medicine charts and care plans. The medicine management within all three houses was very good. The manager had recently changed supplying pharmacy and installed a new system. This has had a positive impact on the level of medicine management in the home. Training was provided and all staff understood how the system worked and followed the new process well. All medicines are checked into the home and staff record what they receive. Audits indicated that the medicines had been administered as prescribed. Both nursing staff and care assistants spoken with had a very good knowledge of the medicines they handled and the clinical conditions of the people who use the service. All the medicines were stored safely and kept in locked trolleys and cabinets within designated medication rooms. The temperature of the medication room in Beech House was too hot to store the medicines in compliance with their product licenses. We, the commission, were assured by the manager that an air conditioning unit was on order and awaiting to be installed in two weeks time. One refrigerator was broken in Ash House and a replacement was on order. All medication requiring refrigeration for that unit was stored in Cedar House. Concern was raised that the temperature was too cold and staff had recorded a different daily temperature to that seen on the thermometer. The manager was to check this after the inspection. The care plans were very good and all external health care professional visits had been documented. It was possible track the reasons people were prescribed medication. All staff have full access to information to fully support the people who live in the home clinical needs. All the controlled drug balances were accurate and reflected that recorded.
