This unannounced visit was carried out by two inspectors on the 22nd September 2008 from 2.20pm until 6.20pm. The purpose of the visit was to look at compliance of the requirements made at the last inspection in June 2008. Time was spent on two units, talking with residents, staff, the manager and deputy manager as well as looking at care plans and other documentation. All the requirements made at the last inspection had been addressed and the majority have been met. Those not met are ongoing such as the need to continue to develop the care plans. Also the need to replace all the wheelchairs that do not have two leg rests. Three wheelchairs were seen on one unit and two of them only had one leg rest. The manager said that all care staff are presently going through a moving and handling refresher course, with new wheelchairs being introduced to each floor The interactions observed were positive. Residents who were having their evening meal were positioned comfortably, with plates and drinks within easy reach. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
The quality of the care plans has improved but they need to be to be developed further to be consistently clear, detailed and person centred. All senior staff complete training in supervision of staff to ensure that staff receive adequate supervision in order to appropriately support the residents. Staff should ensure that relevant information provided in the needs assessment is used to inform the home’s own assessment and the resident’s care plan. It would be important to develop strategies for supporting people with dementia and challenging behaviour so as to give a consistency of care for people. Care Homes for Older People
