The purpose of the visit was to look at compliance of the requirements made at the last inspection in March 2009 Time was spent talking with the Manager and staff and on the first floor unit, looking at care plans and other documentation. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) completed by the Manager was also used to inform this inspection. The interactions observed between staff and residents were positive. The requirement and the recommendations made at the last inspection have been met. The Manager reported in their AQAA that the staff were now better trained in person centred care planning. Care plans are reviewed monthly with the residents and, if they wish, with their families or representatives. The care plans seen on the first floor were more centred on how someone may wish to be supported. Their was a greater picture of the whole of the person highlighting their needs and preferences. St Vincents now has a weekly visit from a Consultant Geriatrician to the great benefit of the people who live in the home. The Consultant also provides training to the staff whose increased knowledge also benefits the residents care. The issue about changing from cook chill to in house catering continues. Currently peoples cultural requirements are met through local sources who provide polish and Caribbean food. There is now more than 50 of care staff who have gained a NVQ level 2 qualification and a rolling programme to ensure that all care staff achieve training. The role of the senior carers has been developed and there are further plans to provide training particularly in management training. Their current role is to oversee carers on the units, provide supervision and link with the nursing staff. The home has just been recommended for a Beaconstatus, for its end of life care by the Gold Standards Framework (GSF) What the care home does well: St Vincents has been accredited for their the end of life care (Gold Standard Framework) primarily this was for their work within the palliative care unit but they are now putting this into action throughout the home for the benefit of all residents. They are continuing their links with Trinity Hospice.
