What the care home does well

Residents` rooms are personalised with their own furniture and personal belongings. Meals are of a high standard and are served in an attractive and wellpresented manner. The staff team is motivated and committed and respond to residents in a respectful and appropriate manner. Residents described the Beeches as a `good home`. They say it is clean and provides excellent meals and staff are highly thought of.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Several bedrooms in the home have been refurbished and floor coverings have been replaced. New linen and curtains have been purchased. There is now a signature list in place for all staff who administer medication. The home has developed a quality assurance system in place to ensure that the home is run in the best interests of residents. The home has developed a procedure for the safe keeping of residents` money. The home`s kitchen cupboards and worktops have been replaced. The home now has a structured supervision framework in place to ensure that all staff receive regular supervision.

What the care home could do better:

The home must address weaknesses in care planning, waterlow and nutritional assessments through regular review and staff training. When medication is received in the home the medication administration and record sheets must be signed and dated to verify that it has been checked and is correct. Residents who are able to administer their own medication should be encouraged to do so with the appropriate risk assessments in place. The home should ensure that the clinical waste bin be kept locked to prevent rodents and vermin gaining access. The home must ensure that it complies with the recruitment procedure to ensure that staff are appropriately vetted. The home must ensure that the emergency lights are checked monthly to comply with health and safety guidelines. The home must ensure that hot water temperature outlets are regulated to prevent the risk of Legionella.
