What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have received since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. Surveys were sent to service users, staff and health care professionals. Information we have about how the service manages complaints. The previous inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last twelve months. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The last key inspection for this service was undertaken on the 18th June 2007. This is the second Annual Service Review (ASR) undertaken for this service, the first ASR was undertaken on the 10th June 2008. The registered manager returned the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) to us when we asked for it. Again, this document requires further information in regard to how the home is achieving the outcomes for people who use the service. This was discussed with the manager during a telephone conversation on the 10th July 2009. We also sought clarification in regard to how many permanent care staff were currently working at the home as this was not clear in the AQAA. The manager told us that there are thirteen permanent care staff, of which nine hold the minimum of an NVQ level 2 and above. One member of staff is currently undertaking this training. The AQAA informs that thorough assessments are undertaken before a place is offered to a prospective resident wishing to reside at the home. Care plans are in place and are reviewed on a monthly basis. Residents have access to a GP and all National Health Services (NHS) as required. Medication is only administered by qualified staff. The home has a complaints procedure in place, and they have dealt with one complaint during the last twelve months. Staff receive training in regard to Safeguarding Adults. There has been one Safeguarding Adults investigation during the last twelve months. The environment is kept clean, tidy and free from malodour. There is a good skill mix of staff on duty, and there is a high ratio of staff to residents. The registered manager has been managing the home for nine years, and is a qualified Registered General Nurse (RGN), and holds the Registered managers Award (RMA). The AQAA has identified what the home could do better, and the plans for improvement during the next twelve months. We received completed surveys from four residents and five members of staff. All residents surveys were complimentary about the care home. Comments included, Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 They look after my every need, The staff and Matron are very caring and respectful. Staff surveys informed that they receive all the training they require, that the home is well run and meets all the personal care needs of residents. One issue was raised in regard to staff numbers during the night time. This was discussed with the manager during our telephone conversation on the 10th July 2009. The manager told us that she was aware of this and is currently reviewing the staffing arrangements for the late evening and night time. The Care Quality Commission have not received any concerns, complaints or allegations in regard to the care home during the last twelve months. The home continues to us know about things that have happened during the last twelve months. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will conduct a key inspection before the end of July 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
