What the care home does well

There was a relaxed and homely atmosphere a the home, people living there appeared relaxed, comfortable and well cared for. People we spoke with said they were satisfied with the service they received.Staff spoken with said they were well supported and received the training they required. Care plans were detailed and provided staff with the information they required to meet peoples needs. Staff recruitment procedures were robust and minimized risk for people living at the home.

What the care home could do better:

All aspects of personal and environmental security must be risk assessed and procedures put in place that minimize risk, it is recommended that people living at the home be consulted about this. Staffing levels were not always sufficient to meet people needs. Consideration must be given to finding alternative ways to cover shifts when people ring in sick at short notice.

Qualified nurses are on duty throughout the 24-hour period. The home is close to the village of Tixover on the A47, surrounded by open countryside. It is set within well-maintained grounds and is bright, clean and modern in design. All areas of the home and gardens are accessible to people who use wheelchairs. Many rooms have en-suite facilities and can be personalised with the residents own furniture, if so desired. There are attractive communal sitting rooms, and a dining area on the ground floor. There are additional toilets, and assisted bathing and showering facilities for less able residents. There is an in house laundry service and all food is freshly prepared and cooked on site. The Statement of Purpose and Service Users Guide (both give information about the home) are provided for all new residents, and a copy is available in the reception area, with the most recent inspection report. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This random inspection included a visit to the service. We visited the home on the 5th of October 2009. Since the last key inspection, three separate concerns have been raised about this service. The concerns were about care practices, staffing levels and security. The main method of inspection used was case tracking which meant selecting three residents and tracking the quality of their care by checking records, discussion with them and with staff and observation of care practices. We spoke with two people living at the home. People spoken with were satisfied with the care they received and the number of staff on duty. One person said the staff are exceptional, you are treated as real people they are efficient and friendly,the nurses are very well trained. We looked at care records for three people and found they contained needs assessments and care plans. Care plans were detailed and person focused and provided staff with the information they required to meet peoples individual needs and preferences. People we case tracked appeared well cared for, care records indicated that all assessed needs were being met and people had access to the health-care services they required. We looked at staffing rosters and spoke with residents and staff about staffing numbers. People told us that staffing numbers were sufficient and they were not kept waiting for staff to attend to them. Staff told us that staffing levels were sufficient and that a replacement was usually found if a staff member called in sick. We found that during the week prior to this inspection there were three night shifts that only had three staff members on duty when there should have been four, on these occasions replacement staff had not been found. The registered manager told us they were in the process of recruiting more night staff and that they would be using bank staff from another home in the Barchester Group to cover any shifts when needed. We looked at staff recruitment records and found that all necessary checks had been carried out and references obtained, this is to ensure that people working at the home are suitable to do so. We spoke with the registered manager about security at the home. Staff told us there had not been any previous concerns about security at the home. The registered manager told us that night staff carry out a security check each night. A senior manager from the company was investigating security issues at the time of this inspection.
