CSCI found this care home to be providing an Good service.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

Westerham Place provides a well maintained, spacious and comfortable home for people to live in.

What the care home could do better:

The Manager stated said he will update the Statement of Purpose to include the information that residents are offered the option of having locks on their doors. He also agreed to further help safeguard people at the home by securing the free standing frames around the toilets or by replacing them with grab rails and by reviewing the environmental risk assessments to include window safety and regular testing for Legionellas disease.

The home is located just outside the small town of Westerham, which has a variety of shops, pubs, a post office and churches. There is a local bus service and bus stops are nearby. The home consists of a large detached two-storey building with a newer purpose built two-storey extension. All the bedrooms are single with ensuite facilities, including a WC, wash hand basin and bath. In addition there is one assisted bathroom located on the ground floor. There is a large lounge surrounded by a Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home conservatory and a separate dining room. The garden is well kept and attractive. All areas of the home are accessible to people who have limited mobility. There is a lift to the first floor. The home employs care staff 24 hours a day, the majority of the care staff have worked there for some time and there is low staff turnover. The weekly fee range for the service is £750 to £850. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: Westerham Place is located just outside the small town of Westerham, which has a variety of shops, pubs, a post office and churches. The home consists of a large detached two-storey building with a newer purpose built two-storey extension. It continues to be maintained to a high standard, it is clean, well decorated and furnished. There is an ongoing refurbishment and redecoration programme. Three bedrooms have had new carpets fitted recently. The hallway, stairs and landings are to be fitted with new carpets in the near future. All parts of the home are accessible to people who have limited mobility. There is a lift to the first floor. The Manager described how residents with mobility problems are accommodated on the ground floor wherever possible. The residents spoken with who have upstairs bedrooms say they use the lift. There is a small stairlift to a bedroom situated up a few additional stairs off the landing. All the bedrooms are for single occupancy and have ensuite facilities. The Manager stated residents are offered the option of having locks on their doors and said he will update the Statement of Purpose to include this. Each bedroom has a lockable facility for residents to store their possessions securely, should they so wish. Residents personalise their bedrooms with their own furniture and pictures, giving a homely feel. The bedrooms seen reflect the occupants tastes and residents spoken with like their rooms and find them comfortable. In addition to the ensuite facilities there is a communal bathroom with a Parker bath located on the ground floor. Residents say they find the bathing and toilet facilities adequate for their needs. The hot water was tested by hand at several outlet points and found to be at a safe temperature. The Manager explained that hot water temperatures are thermostatically controlled, likewise, radiators have thermostatic control valves. There is a large lounge surrounded by a conservatory and a separate dining room. Residents have equipment for personal use such as tripods, walking frames and sensory equipment. The home provides other equipment for shared use to help service users maintain independence and to assist with their care. A staff call system is available with calls being answered promptly at the time of the inspection. The Manager agreed to make toilets safer to use by securing the free standing frames around them or by replacing them with grab rails. The Manager said he will be reviewing the environmental risk assessments to include window safety and regular testing for Legionellas disease. These actions will further help safeguard people at the home. The garden is well maintained and attractive. Residents can choose to spend time in their rooms, the lounge or conservatory area. There is also a pleasant small sitting area on the first floor. The dining room is spacious and looks out over the garden. Residents spoken with in their bedrooms say Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 they like to be there at certain times for health reasons or just for personal preference.
