Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received from Whittington Care Centre, or asked them for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service, and was received in May 2009. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some statistical and numerical information about the service. We sent out five questionnaires to people who live at Whittington Care Centre, five to relatives and five to staff. At the time of writing this annual service review none have been returned. Information we have about Whittington Care Centre on the QA system has been reviewed, including any complaints or concerns that have been raised. We reviewed the Regulation 37 forms that have been submitted, these are a legal requirement and tell us about incidents that have affected the well being of the people living at the care home. The last key inspection report and the inspection record have been reviewed The service folder was reviewed for any other relevant information. We also looked at any relevant information that we have received about Whittington Care Centre from other organisations. We looked at what other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA was returned within the time scale asked for, however the detail within the AQAA was rather brief and this meant that the lack of sufficient depth made it difficult for judgements to be made. Among the improvements to the service identified in the AQAA were: More choice of food menus, more personalised care plans - all about me. Staff more competent in documentation, recording accidents & incidents, and liasing with profesionals. Continuing with the dementia strategy. Creating a home to look and feel like a home. Safe guarding - staff to be aware of whistle blowing procedures to be more aware and competant. Refurbishment, new bedroom floors, carpets, library, activities room. Staffing level improved to occupancy day and night. Manager has identified problem areas between staff. team work and lack of information passed on to the manager to maintain correct evidance. The Commission has received one complaint regarding this service since the last key inspection, this was passed to Southern Cross for their attention, and is ongoing at this time. In their AQAA the care home stated they had received six complaints in the last twelve months, none of which were upheld. Three safeguarding adults referral have been made, resulting in turn in three safeguarding adults investigations, which led to three referrals to the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) list. We have received twenty seven Regulation 37 forms during the past twelve months to report any notifiable incidents involving people who live at the care home or the staff, these were routine notifications, and did not lead to any further investigation, or concern. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 As, we have not had any questionnaires returned, it has not been possible to take account of comments received from people living at the care home, their relatives or the staff in the judgement process. At the last key inspection this care home was rated as being a good service. We have not received any information from other agencies about Whittington Care Centre which would trigger a response from us or cause us to alter our inspection plan. There is currently one issue - related to a bad odour at the home, which is being addressed by Southern Cross. There are no other ongoing concerns about the quality of care Whittington Care Centre offers, and a review of the documentation that has been received does not highlight any issues that need to be immediately addressed. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and we will carry out a key inspection by 31 July 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality there or the safety of the people using the service Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information Document Purpose: Author: Audience: Further copies from: Annual service review CQC General Public 0870 240 7535 (national contact centre) Our duty to regulate social care services is set out in the Care Standards Act 2000.
