Following an anonymous complaint that several areas of the home smelt strongly of urine, a referral was made to the provider, who provided a written response. However a second anonymous complaint about a similar issue triggered a visit to the home to assess the actions taken to improve the situation. A partial tour of the building with the manager to the areas identified as having a strong odour, showed a slight background odour, although not strong or overpowering, as had been described in the complaints. A quote has been received to replace the lounge and passageway carpets, and this is currently with the provider - Southern Cross for agreement, as it runs to several thousand pounds. Some of the chairs in the lounge are of an upholstered type, and some of these are also giving off a slight odour of urine. Several bedrooms were seen, including one where the carpet has been replaced with linoleum, and this is a great improvement, although it did prompt a conversation about slip hazards when wet, and one area where a laminate floor has been laid has made staff very aware of it being slippy when wet. The manager has recently introduced an action plan with the cleaning staff, and is monitoring the cleanliness of the home, together with cleaning strategies that are already in place. To help monitor this, the manager has an evidence file for reference. The local NHS continence advisor has been a frequent visitor to Whittington Care Centre, and has undertaken staff training, as well as offering advice. Despite many of the windows being open, and a number of electric fans working at their maximum, there is not a natural air flow through the building, which makes some areas appear stuffy.
