What the care home does well The care files for 3 individuals were seen. Care plans were clear, and were being reviewed on a monthly basis. Evidence was seen of a referral to the Deprivation of Liberties Standards (DoLS) team, which demonstrated awareness of new local initiatives relating to the legislation. Evidence of an open, multi-disciplinary approach was also seen, with the continence nurse, the falls nurse and infection control all being consulted for advice and guidance. During the partial tour of the building there was no evidence of bad odour anywhere in the home. New laminate flooring was being laid in the lounge and entrance hall. There had been some redecoration, and evidence was seen that further redecoration is planned. A positive attempt has been made to improve the environment, and discussions with the manager showed that there was thought behind the improvements, rather than just carrying out work to meet the requirements. For example consideration had been given to the type of laminate flooring being laid, and slip hazards associated with this type of flooring, and where the use of wallpaper would be most appropriate. Inspection of the staffing rota showed that a second nurse has been appointed, so there are now two nurses on shift during the day, and this has had two major effects: the `nurse` is less stressed, as she is no longer working on her own, as there is someone else with whom to share the tasks, and the quality of the tasks has improved as a direct result of `sharing the load.` What the care home could do better: No statutory requirements or good practice recommendations have been made as a result of this random inspection. The inspection visit showed a positive attitude among the staff and a desire to improve the quality of care at the home. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: This random inspection came about as a direct result of concerns raised by colleagues at both the Primary Care Trust and Social Services, and meetings held with those colleagues and senior managers from Southern Cross. A partial tour of the building was carried out to look at the redecoration and the new flooring, and to consider the overall state of the decor, and condition of the building in general. In addition the care records of three people who live at Whittington Care Centre were seen, together with nursing notes, and the staffing rota. Evidence of the involvement of outside health care professional was also seen, together with documentation relating to a referral to the Deprivation of Liberties Standards (DoLS) team.
