What the care home does well We that residents are well looked after at the home. One person said that they liked the staff. This person had their own communication aid which they pressed when they wanted to ask the staff team for something. For example it helped them communicate a wish to go to the cinema. Staff members support the residents well. We observed residents being cared for and supported by the staff members of duty. We saw that they had a good relationship. The staff member told us, "I have worked here for twenty years and most of the residents have been here that length of time too ." We saw that Care plan records are well maintained by the staff team so they understand the needs of the residents and can care for them appropriately in a supportive way. The residents are protected as the staff team ensure that the medical records are appropriately maintained. The residents benefit from a clean and homely environment. The residents are protected by sound and safe employment practices. The accident records showed us that the staff team act quickly and appropriately if the residents have an accident and they take the safest course of action. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: We spoke to one of the residents who lives at the home . We spoke to them about the care and support that the staff help them with, and if they feel happy living at the home. we saw that they received a kind and supportive service. We looked at two peoples care records to see what care and support they need and how the staff provide this to them. We saw that the staff team record peoples needs in files called Planning for life. The senior staff member who has most of the day- to -day responsibility for managing the home told us, We are in the process of updating the residents files so that they are all consistent across the Trust. We saw the files had sufficient information about peoples needs, wishes, interests, communication and medical matters to assist the staff team care for them well. We inspected the controlled drug cupboard and the record of controlled drugs,we did this to see if medications is looked after safely. We saw that there is a separate cabinet for controlled drugs and a system in place for the recording. The senior staff member told us that no residents are taking controlled drugs at the moment. We looked at the health records for all the residents and saw that they are well maintained. The senior staff member told us that each person will have a risk assessment about them self medicating after the move to supportive living. We completed a tour of the house and saw that it is very homey. The senior staff member told us that the house had recently been redecorated and had new carpets through out. We saw residents art work on the walls. The work was of a very high standard and we were told that it had won an award. The house includes a large lounge and dining room. Both were seen to be comfortable. The residents rooms are upstairs and there is a well maintained garden with a wooden house. We saw a residents room and saw that it was individualised to his taste and was bright and cheerful. The resident confirmed that he liked his room and had chosen the colour of the walls. The bathrooms were seen to be clean and hygienic. We asked the senior staff member if we could see staff employment records of two recently recruited members of staff to see if there are safe recruitment processes for employing new staff. He told us that these files are kept at the regional office and that the files in the home contain mostly supervision records and more day to day records. We asked him if he felt confident that the staff files are well maintained by the regional office, he confirmed they were and explained that he has access to staff training records on line. We saw that staff members receive sufficient training to assist them do their jobs. We asked the senior staff member about the management of the home to see if it was stable for the residents. We were told that the previously registered manager had left and that the new locality manager had been in post for about a year. This person has responsibility for three similar homes so the day- to -day management of the home fell mostly to the senior staff member. He was able to demonstrate a good understanding of his role. He contacted the regional office who confirmed that the locality manager had sent the application to the Commission to complete the registered managers process. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 We spoke to two staff members who confirmed they were well supported and received sufficient training to complete their jobs. We asked the senior what plans the Trust had for the house and he told us that by the end of April 2001 the home will be moving to supportive living. They are currently consulting with the residents about their wishes and have involved advocates for them in this process. We asked to see the accident book to see if the residents were safe in the house. We saw that the records are appropriately maintained. The senior staff member was able to describe each accident and the outcome and this was consistent with what we read in the accident records.
