What the care home does well This service makes sure people have their needs well assessed before they come to live at The Abbey. The assessment is used to write a care plan so that staff can follow what care needs and personal preferences people have. The care plans are detailed and thorough so that people can be treated as individuals. Medication is well handled and risks are well managed within an understanding that living a full and interesting live entails a measure of acceptable risk. People have good opportunities to get involved in organised activites and are enabled to be as independent as possible in following their own pursuits. For example, one person has brought a motorised chair to the home and the owners have made an electrical charging point available near to his room, to allow the person to travel into town conveniently. People commented that the food was good, and the owner said that all fresh food is sourced locally. One person said: `The food is very good. They will always get you something different if there`s something you don`t like.` Breakfast is served at any time according to personal preference and people said they could have anything from toast to a full cooked breakfast. People said the manager and owners were keen to receive feedback about how well they were doing and were quick to act if there was ever any complaint. This means people feel listened to and their concerns are acted upon. The Abbey is well maintained and very attractively decorated. There are a number of different lounges and quiet corners for people to rest or socialise with others. People coming to live at the home are encouraged to put their own mark of individuality upon their surroundings, not only in their rooms but the gardens too. One couple had brought a large tub with them which was placed outside their bedroom window where they could enjoy the flowers planted in it. Another person had a corner of the garden with a seat and flowers where she could enjoy gardening, or sitting out when the weather is fine. The home is well staffed and managed and people said they had confidence in the capabilities of the staff and the management of the home. Many people had positive things to say about their lives at The Abbey. One person said: `I can get up and go to bed whenever I like and can stay up late if I want to, which I often do.` Another person said: `I get out and have a walk around most days. The garden is lovely this time of year and I enjoy looking at the plants.` Another person said: `The staff can`t do enough.` Another person said: `There are enough staff on duty. They never seem rushed.` Another person said: `It was a difficult decision to move here, but it was the right one. We`ve struck gold.` What the care home could do better: The service has an excellent quality assurance system. Required improvements are identified by this system and the owner, manager and staff work hard to make sure people get the care they need and enjoy their lives at The Abbey. Random inspection report

A tour of the premises. 5. Notifications sent to us by the service. 6. Documentation, letters or other information kept by CQC on the service file. What the care home does well:
