What the care home does well People are properly assessed before moving into the home. People told me they had enough information about the home before they moved in. One person told me that family had visited and looked around the home and the manager visited them before they were admitted, to introduce herself and talk to them about the home and what to expect. During the inspection people told me they really enjoyed living at the home. One person said `it`s like home from home, it`s smashing here`. Another person said ` the staff cannot do enough for us they are all angels`. People said they enjoyed the food they were given and said that there was a good choice. One person said `the meals are great, I really enjoy my breakfast`. The daily menu choice was on display in the dining room and people could choose what they wanted. I looked at two care plans. They gave instruction to care staff on what support and care was required to meet the persons needs. The manager told me that currently a new care plan format was being introduced into the home and a staff meeting was taking place during the inspection to introduce it to staff. There are thorough recruitment and selection procedures in place, to make sure that staff are suitable and safe to work with the people who live at the home. Care and support is delivered by skilled competent staff. People know that they can complain, and that they will be listened to. One person said they would complain to the manger or any of the staff and would be confident that their concerns would be listened to and acted upon. Staff know their responsibilities in passing on any concerns which affect the safety and vulnerability of people. The manager told us in the AQAA ` We offer a safe and caring enviroment where people live in a homely atmosphere. People who stay at Carentan house are encouraged and supported to be as independent as possible from staff who work with a personal approach. Staff are trained through both internal and external trainers and also do courses via the E-Learning where appropriate. The home offers a varied and nutritional menu that includes dishes that are chosen by the residents. We also cater for special diets ensuring their needs are met.Our dining room tables have information on them highlighting what times are flexible meals are. On a Wednesday our activity resource worker engages people in a variety of activities chosen by the people who live at Carentan House. The people can join in as much or a little as they would like. Our homenow offers a shower room giving people the choice of having a bath or a shower. Some bedrooms have been upgraded with new carpets, bedroom furniture and personal touches`. What the care home could do better: This service continues to provide excellent outcomes for people who use it. The manager and staff team are always looking for opportunities to develop and enhance this already excellent service, to ensure a positive experience for people who live and work at the home. To further the service offered to people it has been recommended that the manager review the way in which the laundry in the home is undertaken. The washing machines are located on the ground floor of the home and are in the same rooms as the sluice sink. During the inspection commode pans were left in the laundry alongside clean washing that had just bee removed from the washing machine. The manager needs to risk assess the situation and make sure that cross contamination of infection is manged properly. Random inspection report

This was an unannounced inspection of Carentan House. The homes staff and the people living there did not know that we were going to visit on this day. During our visit we looked at a selection of records, looked round some parts of the building and talked to some of the people who live at the home and the staff who work there. Before our visit we looked at all of the information we had about the service and asked the home to complete an annual quality assurance assessment (AAQA). This is a selfassessment that tells us about the home. We also sent out surveys to people who live and work at the home. We used all of this information to plan our inspection visit and have included it in this report where appropriate. What the care home does well:
