What the care home does well There are good systems in place to ensure that peoples` needs are assessed records show that person centred plans are in place. Plans are regularly updated to reflect peoples` individual needs. The systems for administering medicines are well organised and protect the two people living in the home.People have access to day services, college and events in the local community. They lead active lives and enjoy regular holidays. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints and safeguarding matters. This helps to keep people safe. As there are only two people living in the home, the owner provides most of the support to them, but she has assistance to allow her some breaks and this appears to work well. Staff have appropriate training and are experienced in caring for these people. What the care home could do better: No requirements or recommendations were made at this inspection. The house has sea views and is in within walking distance of the sea front. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home The home is close to all local amenities and there are good transport links. The home is well maintained and there is a homely atmosphere. The home provides care for two adults, one with learning disabilities, one of who is over 65 years and one with a physical disability. There are two ground floor bedrooms and one on the first floor. The gardens are landscaped, highly attractive and seating is provided. Fees for the home are £410.10 per week. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: This service has an excellent three star rating that was last assessed on . An annual service review was undertaken on 1 April 2009. This random inspection lasted two hours and during that time we looked at how peoples needs are met, staffing arrangements and complaints handling. Individual plans were in place for the two people living in the home and these contained good information about peoples needs and how these are met. It was evident that peoples needs are regularly assessed and changes are updated in individual plans. Plans show that peoples health care needs are identified and that the people living in the home have appropriate access to health care services as necessary. Risks are assessed and updated as necessary. Questionnaires submitted by two relatives showed that they are satisfied with the service offered and both said the standard of care provided is good. One person said that he was very happy with his lifestyle and that he receives good support at Aberwicke. People are encouraged to follow their interests and take an active part in local community events. They have regular trips to the caravan and holidays abroad. One person has a laptop computer and is using this with an educational project. Each person has a good programme of weekly activities including college and day services. Systems are in place to make sure that people take their medicines properly. Risk assessments are in place for one person who handles his own medicines. These are regularly updated. Staff training in managing medicines has been provided. The owner is aware of the need to have in place good systems for dealing with and recording complaints. She has a good rapport with people living in the home and their families. Questionnaires said that people would feel able to raise concerns if they had any. One person said that he was able to speak to the manager if he had any concerns. Staff have completed safeguarding training. Staffing is mainly provided by the owner, but two staff members provide support as necessary. They know the people living in the home well and have received appropriate training opportunities to equip them with the skills they need to meet peoples needs. Records show that staff have regular training to ensure that they have the skills to meet peoples needs and that updating training is provided as necessary. Staff supervision is provided at regular intervals and records confirmed this.
