Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received, or requested, since the last key inspection. This included the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by this service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. We looked at surveys returned to us by staff, healthcare professionals and people using the service. We have considered things that the manager has told us about what has happened within the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. We have also looked at any other information from external organisations we may have received. The previous key inspection report was taken into consideration as well. What has this told us about the service? This service did not send us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we requested it. A reminder was sent and the AQAA was received the day before the deadline. We looked at the information in the AQAA which was brief and our judgement is that the care home is still providing a good service. The AQAA told us that the service provides a safe, secure and comfortable home environment where there is a family atmosphere. They monitor and promote good health with ongoing medical attention and appropriate diet. Full assistance in all aspects of personal care is provided and service users are encouraged to take pride in their appearance and to dress appropriately according to their environment. The manager monitors medication and clear records are kept. Care Plans are held on file and individual diaries schedule the reviews. Service Users needs are monitored and care plans are revised twice a year if not more frequently. No further changes have been perceived as necessary in this area. The attainment of goals are encouraged for independence within the boundaries of safety. Each service user attends a day centre that offers education, training and job satisfaction The manager says that she ensures that Service Users are involved in all aspects of the homes running and plans. She also states that she liaises with day centres, families, outside agents and friends to create a good degree of inclusion. The manager states that the concerns and complaints procedures meet the required regulations. There have been no complaints to the home or the Commission in the past year. There have been safeguarding issues investigated by the Department of Adult Social Care in the past year. The home has been decorated both internally and externally over the past twelve months. New mattresses have been purchased, also a new oven and other electrical items. It is hoped that the home will increase in size over the coming year and that the extension will be completed. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 An extra member of staff has been employed and it is hoped a further member of staff will be employed in the coming months. Refresher training has been scheduled for staff and further training is to take place over the next year. We received three surveys from people using the service; these were completed with the assistance of a member of staff at the home. They were extremely positive about the home and the services provided. When asked what the home does well they commented Nice people, Dog, cat, fish and birds, Nice food and Nice staff. There were no other comments. We received two surveys from staff who work at the home and these were also positive. When asked what the home does well they commented Creates a pleasant homely environment with everyone contributing and residents needs being met, The house feels more like home (as it should do) than a care home and Meets the needs of service users and staff very well. The only other comment was I enjoy my work at Appledown very much. It is a happy home where staff, service users and service users families feel relaxed in a friendly environment with lots of support. We did not receive any surveys from external healthcare professionals. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do an Key inspection by 18 February 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
