What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service; these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organizations and what other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the agency is still providing a good service and that they know what improvements they need to make. In their AQAA the home told us We do the following to ensure that race, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion and belief are promoted and incorporated into what we do; We continue to provide individual personalized care, incorporating the six strands of diversity: Gender, Age, Sexual orientation, Race, Religion or Belief and Disability. All staff continue to be trained to incorporate the above in the care they deliver. We employ an experienced diverse staff team. Also we have made the following changes to ensure that equality and diversity has been promoted within our service: Equality and Diversity is discussed during staff supervision and staff meetings, our residents have expressed that they are happy with the service that we provide, we have incorporated personal profiles within our care plans to ensure that we have a full understanding of our clients preferences and needs. And finally we are planning to make these further changes to promote equality and diversity to ensure both are reflected in all we do: Ongoing comprehensive staff induction and training, we are planning to revise our pre-admission assessments to better reflect the six strands of diversity, the residents have shown an interest in learning about staff cultures and having cultural themed days within the home. In their AQAA when asked to summarize what they did well the home told us: Applewood provides a high level of individualised person centered care in a pleasant, Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 clean and safe environment. We always endeavor to protect and care for our residents well, we provide a highly competent staff team who have received comprehensive training, we provide continuity to our residents and do not use agency staff, and we value the opinions of our clients and implement our practice based on their individual requests, needs and wishes. Improvements in the last twelve months have included:A comprehensive training programme, lower than average staff turnover, varied and plentiful activities, pleasant and safe environment, introduction of personal profiles have enabled us to deliver a more person centered approach. Proposes future plans and developments of this service include: Dementia mapping to be implemented, individual memory boxes and journals to be implemented, more residents/relatives meetings may be beneficial; more staff meetings could be beneficial. The home has shown that they have managed issues well. No complaints have been received by CSCI the previous regulator or CQC since the last inspection. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for people who use the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 28th September 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
