Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received or asked for since the last annual service review. This included: - The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by people who use the service, staff who work at the service, and health care professionals involved with the care of people using the service. - Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened to people using the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. The AQAA provided us with the information we asked for. We looked at the AQAA and our judgement is that the service is still providing good quality care for people who live at Ashcroft Hostel. The AQAA told us, amongst other things that the service has continued to develop wider links with the community with an emphasis on social activities to compliment their educational and employment links. It told us that it continues to develop the crisis intervention support for people as an alternative to hospital admission for people in distress or crisis. It told us that staff training has increased over the last year, and the service has improved the training given to staff about protecting vulnerable adults (safeguarding adults). It told us that over half the staff have a National Vocational Qualification in Care to Level two, with the remaining staff working towards the certificate. It also told us that out of 17 staff, only two are agency/bank staff. The AQAA also told us that one complaint had been received through the services complaints procedure, but this had not been upheld. There have also been three safeguarding adult investigations. We looked at the surveys sent out to people who use the service, staff, and health and social care professionals. We received five surveys back from people who use the service. All were very positive about the support they received from staff working at Ashcroft Hostel. When asked Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 about what the home does well, people said: care, food, accommodation, hygiene, peace and quiet keeps me well, when I am feeling unwell staff respond the home provides a refuge for people who are vulnerable and who probably would find it difficult to cope with life without support One person went on further to say I consider myself to have been very fortunate to have been able to spend some time here. It has helped me to turn my life around. We received eight responses from staff. Seven of the eight who responded informed us that they were given good support by management to do their work, and six felt there was at least usually or always enough staff to meet the individual needs of people living in the home. One person felt they were never supported by management, and felt there was never enough staff to meet the needs of people using the service. Typical comments from staff were, when asked what the home does well: provides support in a flexible way that helps the individual to recover at their own pace responds to individual needs everything, we bring different skills to the unit. A lot of people do not realise how well we work here...we mentor and counsel our residents to perform to the best of heir abilities. Only one member of staff commented on what the home could do better, and they said: more support from management, staff to work as a team, better hand overs. The health and social care professional who responded was generally positive about the service and thought it did well in providing an alternative to hospital/residential care. But they felt the service would be better with more trained/skilled staff. We looked at the Regulation 37 notifications that the service has sent to us. We were satisfied with the action taken by the service in relation to these incidents. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor the service and will undertake an unannounced key inspection as part of our monitoring process.
