Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found:
We undertook a Random Inspection of Aspen Lodge on the 6 October 2009. The reason for our visit was to follow up on the previous key inspection, which took place on 7 July 2009 and to see if the improvements we saw at our last visit have been sustained. During our visit we had the opportunity to speak with 6 residents 3 members of staff the home manager and also the registered manager. At the last visit we made 3 requirements to improve the quality of service provided. At this visit we found that the home had complied with all the requirements made following the previous inspection. We looked at two care records of people accommodated at the home and this included the records of one service user who had been admitted since our last visit. The care plans seen had good information on what support the service user needed and there was information for staff on how the service user would like their care to be given. For example; one plan stated needs support with washing and the plan went on to explain to staff exactly what type of support was needed. This enabled staff to offer the correct level of support to service users, in the way they prefer. We saw that care plans are reviewed monthly by the home manager and also by key workers. The reviews included an evaluation of how the care plan was working for the individual and also provided evidence that the service user was involved in the review process. Daily recording is carried out and the recording seen had good information on care delivery. We looked at the homes medication policy and there was a clear policy and procedure for the receipt, storage, administration and disposal of medication. There was also information regarding any when required medication. Staff at the home who are authorised to administer medication had all received training and the Medication Administration Records (MAR) that we looked at were found to be up to date with no omissions. This provided evidence that people receive their medications as prescribed. During our visit to the home we looked at the homes staffing arrangements and the staff rota showed that between 0800 and 2000 there are a minimum of 3 staff members on duty. Between 2000 and 0800 there are two staff members who are awake throughout the night. Care staff are supported by domestic staff and a cook. The registered manager who is also the responsible individual, works at the home flexibly throughout the week. The home is registered to provide support for 20 residents and at the time of this visit there were 15 people living at the home. What the care home does well:
